Astrology...Aspects in Mundo

Aspects in Mundo

NASA/JPL-Caltech

Few Westerners embrace the sidereal zodiac, but right ascension, or RA as it is commonly called, is a tropical, not a sidereal coordinate, and can be part of the lexicon of both major schools. This is especially true since it played a role in Medieval, Renaissance and Enlightenment Age Western astrology.

However, until the advent of computers, unless one of the national astronomical ephemerides was available such as the (French) Connaissance des Temps, The (British) Nautical Almanac and Astronomical Ephemeris or the American Ephemeris & Nautical Almanac (now retitled The Astronomical Almanac), the only options were to buy the excellent American Sidereal Ephemeris, or calculate right ascension and declination from celestial latitude and longitude, a process few astrologers have been willing to undertake. (For the undaunted, the formulae for the conversion of celestial longitude and latitude to right ascension and declination are appended to the end of this article.)

The rationale of mundane aspects and the requisite use of right ascension and declination has now been incorporated into most of the big, general purpose astrological programs using an option for aspects in mundo; and since these aspects are not referenced to the ecliptic, they give the same results no matter which zodiac or ayanamsa is employed.

Generally, astrologers favor longitude while astronomers favor right ascension

Many astrological applications employ R.A.:

  • astrocartographic lines are always calculated and drawn from right ascension and declination coordinates;
  • the local sidereal time of a horoscope is really the right ascension of the local meridian; and
  • the rising, culminating, setting and anti-culminating positions of the bodies, that is, their positions in mundo, are most easily grasped when expressed in terms of right ascension for bodies which are not on the ecliptic.

But, unless a body is directly on the ecliptic, it will not rise, culminate or set precisely with its ecliptic position, but rather with some other position which varies with one's terrestrial latitude and the declination of the body.

Only the Sun is always on the ecliptic.

However, most of the planets can have enough celestial latitude off the ecliptic to make a significant difference vis-à-vis their rising and setting positions in zodiaco which are merely schematic, and their rising/setting positions in mundo which are actual.

  • Saturn can have more than 2½º of latitude,
  • Mercury almost 5º,
  • the Moon more than 5º,
  • Mars almost 7º,
  • Venus more than 8½º and
  • Pluto more than 17º.

Consequently, since horoscopes are judged mainly in terms of celestial longitude, the other coordinates--celestial latitude, right ascension and declination, which contain relationships not apparent from the perspective of mere longitude, are completely missed, unless the positions of the planets in mundo are calculated. The table which contains these data is called a speculum.

fig 1 solar system geometry
Celestial longitude (see figure 1) is reckoned along the ecliptic which is the plane of the Earth's orbit around the Sun.

It is measured eastward from the vernal equinox from 0º to 360º in 30º sections which are the tropical signs; or eastward along the ecliptic with alpha Virginis (Spica) defined as 29º Virgo 06' 05", also measured from 0º to 360º in 30º sections which are the sidereal signs. This is the fiducial of the Fagan-Allen ayanamsa used by western siderealists.

The principal ayanamsa used in Vedic astrology, Lahiri, defines Spica as 0º Libra 00' 00". Celestial latitude is measured above and below (north and south) the ecliptic from 0º to 90º at right angles to the ecliptic, such that 0º latitude is the ecliptic itself.

Right ascension is measured along the celestial equator, which some may think a misnomer, because the celestial equator is really the terrestrial equator extended beyond the limits of the Earth.

In fact, right ascension and declination are directly analogous to terrestrial latitude and longitude extended out into space.

  • Right ascension is measured eastward from the vernal equinox usually in time, i.e., hours, minutes and seconds from 0 to 24.
  • Declination is measured from the celestial equator, where its value is 0º, north and south to the poles, where it has 90º.

A body will appear in the zenith of the terrestrial parallel which has the same value as its declination. This means that a star, planet, spacecraft or meteor will not appear directly overhead if you live at 37º north latitude, unless the body has 37º north declination.

Note that the Earth's poles, which are just the terrestrial poles extended off the planet, are inclined at an angle to the ecliptic. This angle, currently 23º 26' 14" (although it varies by almost 2 ½º over a period of 40,000 years), is the obliquity of the ecliptic. It accounts for the seasons.

If the Earth's poles were perpendicular to the ecliptic plane, there would be only one invariable season on the Earth.

The right ascension and declination system is the same kind of grid system as terrestrial longitude and latitude and celestial longitude and latitude, but the obliquity of the ecliptic makes the orientation of right ascension and declination different than the ecliptic grid by the value of the obliquity.

The hidden relationships in Albert Einstein's horoscope

Albert Einstein's horoscope (see figure 2) illustrates the value of mundane aspects, especially since his chart has been worked to death in unpersuasive attempts to find the signature of genius.

Einstein's Mercury is more than 66º from his Mars which is essentially no aspect, although some brave souls may call it a weak sextile, but even they would surely admit that not much could be expected from it. However a look at his speculum shows that his Mercury had right ascension 0h12m10s, i.e., that value of sidereal time was in the meridian when Mercury culminated. His Mars, exalted in Capricorn (both tropically and sidereally) in the seventh house, bodily set in the west when 0h10m25s was in the meridian.

fig 2 albert einstein
Therefore Mercury and Mars were simultaneously precisely angular only 1 minute and 45 seconds apart. Since 4 minutes of time equals 1 degree of arc, this aspect is less than ½ degree from the precise to the second contact. The relationships of planets, or lack of it, in zodiacal longitude is of no account when they are in the angles, rather, only their relationship in RA expressed in terms of the meridian is what constitutes the aspect.

Often there is no conceivable zodiacal relationship between the bodies that make the closest aspect in the chart. And yet, without recourse to the perspective afforded by mundane aspects, it will never be discovered unless the chart is examined for primary directions in RA.

In Einstein's case, it's not obvious that Mercury and Mars are in mundane aspect because they weren't angular when he was born. But the power of the aspect at the birthplace is not diminished because the planets become simultaneously angular later. That the relationship has formed between bodies such that they would be on angles for the birth time and place is what makes the aspect.

Moreover, the effect is imprinted on the psyche as with zodiacal aspects. Even though the effect can be diminished by moving to a locale that weakens the aspect, this writer's experience suggests that mundane aspects effective at the birth parallel are never rendered null and void in terms of the character traits they symbolize. However, their circumstance potential is compromised if the native moves away from the places where the planets are strongest.

Instead of judging Einstein's Mercury solely from its conjunction with Saturn, Mars has to be added to the mix. In the 20/20 of hindsight it's clear that the acuity and deeply penetrating insight of the Mars-Mercury mundane square, complimented his extraordinary capacity to render order out of abstraction, symbolized by Saturn conjunct Mercury in sidereal Pisces. With both traditional malefics working on his Mercury, it is noteworthy that his work led directly to the development of atomic weapons.

If you are without a computer program to do it for you, there is no shortcut around the calculation to find when a planet rises and sets. Einstein's Mars had almost 1º of south celestial latitude, and his Mercury was not exactly on the ecliptic either. Thus, it won't do to simply count the degrees in longitude between angle and planet, because his planets were not exactly angular when their ecliptic positions were. Furthermore, the signs and constellations rise and set with rates that vary as a function of one's terrestrial latitude. So the rule of thumb for horizon contacts is, "Never use a rule of thumb--always calculate to avoid grossly inaccurate results."

To determine when a planet or star rises or sets, the diurnal semi-arc of the body must be found, which is nothing more than the morning arc, expressed in time, between the ascendant in question and the upper meridian. To get the semi-arc you must know the ascensional difference of the body, which is only the difference between the rising time of a body in oblique ascension and a body rising perpendicular to the horizon in question, i.e., the angle between the ecliptic and your horizon, and a right angle to your horizon. The formula is:

sine ascensional difference = (tangent declination) (tangent latitude)

where declination is the declination of the body and latitude is the terrestrial latitude of the place.

  • If the ascensional difference (a/d) is positive, add it to 90º; if negative, subtract it from 90º
  • Do the reverse for the southern hemisphere, i.e., you would subtract a positive a/d etc. if you live in the southern hemisphere.
  • Having added or subtracted the a/d as necessary, divide it by 15 (because 15º = 1 hour of time).

The quotient or result of this division is the diurnal semi-arc of the planet or star. To find the local sidereal time when the planet rises, subtract the semi-arc from the right ascension of the planet. To find the local sidereal time when the planet sets, add the semi-arc to the right ascension of the planet. This little calculation may seem imposing to those who haven't done it, but with a pocket calculator it's easy; and with a quick review of a high school trigonometry book, it will become clear.

For Einstein we first get the right ascension and declination of his Mars from the American Ephemeris & Nautical for 1879, interpolating from the tabular values in the same way that ecliptic longitudes are found. We find that his natal Mars had RA 19h56m33s and 21º 37' 59.5" south declination. The latitude of Ulm, Germany, the birthplace is 48º N 24'.

  • So then we have:
    sin a/d = (tan 21º 37' 59.5")(tan 48º 24')

  • Then the numerical values are put into decimals of degrees which renders:
    sin a/d = (tan 21.633194º)(tan 48.400000º)

  • Then we find the tangents of these numbers which yield:
    sin a/d = (0.396598)(1.126327)

  • Multiplying these we get:
    sin a/d = 0.446698

To get the degree value of the sine of the a/d, just enter the number and then take the arc sin of it which gives 26.532118.
This is the a/d.

  • Since the declination of Mars is negative (south) we subtract the a/d from 90:
      90.000000
    - 26.532118
      63.467882

  • Then we divide this result by 15:
    63.467882 / 15 = 4.231192 hours, or 4h13m52s.

This is Mars' semi-arc.

Now to find the sidereal time transiting the meridian when natal Mars sets,

  • we add the semi-arc to Mars' RA:
    19h56m33s + 4h13m52s = 24h10m25s
which is the same as 0h10m25s.

Thus it is clear that Einstein's Mars and his Mercury, which was in the meridian with 0h12m10s, enjoyed a relationship which caused them to be simultaneously angular.

This process is enough of a bother that most people want to avoid it and to rely on a program, because the computation just described must be done for each planet on both sides of the horizon, and the RA of the planet must be found for both sides of the meridian. But the result of avoiding the procedure is that the majority of practicing astrologers are confounded by the program option.

It is only when something modestly laborious like this exercise in mundo has been understood, to the extent that it can be performed easily by hand, that the program option will be appreciated and used.

What is missed if the technique is not learned is very great indeed: Rob Hand's Horoscope

Robert Hand is one of the best known American astrologer today (see figure 3).

The important relationships with his Sun appear to be limited to the conjunctions with Mercury and Venus and the opposition to Saturn. The opposition to Uranus (11º) is much too wide to be effective. And, the 6º trine to Pluto is exceedingly weak if, indeed it is operative at all, inasmuch as neither planet is angular and they are both under the Earth.

fig 3 robert handjpg
Actually, the opposition of the Sun to Saturn, which appears to be 4½º from exact in zodiaco, is only 2º from exact in mundo because Saturn had almost 2º of south latitude and therefore rose well after its ecliptic degree.

One might guess that Saturn was the dominant player in respect of his solar influences. But the closest aspect in his horoscope is the mundane square between Neptune and the Sun, barely more than ¼º from the exact to the second contact.

In the opinion of Charles E. O. Carter (1887-1968), arguably the greatest English tropical astrologer of this century, Sun-Neptune is the most common astrological signature. Certainly it describes the orientation of Hand's talents which otherwise would probably been have been directed toward the hard sciences. The relationship between his Sun and Neptune in zodiaco is close to a quintile, but in 27 years experience, this writer has found no value in them whatsoever. It is the paran square that constitutes the aspect.

Astrological talent per se should not be attributed to everybody with Sun-Neptune combinations. George Washington had the exact mundane square too, and while he may have been a closet occultist in his capacity as a Free-mason, there is no evidence that he embraced astrology.

In Hand's case,

  • Tthe Sun was in the ascendant when Neptune culminated in the meridian. Aspects in mundo also occur below the Earth. The second closest aspect in his chart is a mundane square between Uranus and Pluto.
  • His natal Pluto had RA 8h43m33s; this is the sidereal time with which his Pluto culminated through the upper meridian.. The point exactly opposite this sidereal time is 12 hours later, or RA 20h43m33s which is the sidereal time when Pluto was at the lower meridian.
  • His Uranus rose when the meridian held 20h45m42s. The difference in time between Pluto at the lower meridian and rising Uranus is 2 minutes and 11 seconds of time, which is slightly more than ½º of arc, yet these planets are separated by 65º of longitude.

Because they are so slow in motion, many millions of people have these aspects, but the contact will not manifest in an obvious manner until it is much closer. Even then, it usually only manifests among people who have the combination in angles, or with the lights. But an individual born at a parallel which caused them to be closely mundane square would get a strong dose of what they are about, no matter what their zodiacal relationship.

Uranus and Pluto together are usually disruptive in the extreme but not necessarily in a negative way. For example, by 1920 when Uranus and Pluto were trine, the work of American astronomer Harlow Shapley was accepted as nearer the truth than the older prevailing view of the universe.

Shapley had posited that the Milky Way galaxy was at least ten times bigger than heretofore thought; and the Sun of our solar system was thought to be near the center of it. Shapley's work proved the Sun to be at the edge of the galaxy.

Then, only three years later, another American, Edwin Hubble, proved by his discovery of Cepheid variable stars in the Andromeda nebula in 1923, that the galaxy was more than three and a half times bigger still, than Shapley had thought, i.e., at least 35 times bigger than the view of the cosmos embraced before World War I.

Uranus and Pluto were still closely trine in 1923. Together they radically alter and expand one's perspective on the true nature of the world. Similarly, Hand and Robert Schmidt's work on Project Hindsight have shed light on the nature of early Greek astrology, until now substantially misunderstood and much of it unknown. It takes a close aspect to do that. 65º sextiles (in name only) don't have the power to manifest what is implicit in the relationship.

Siderealists have a reputation for calling events with occasionally startling precision.

In truth, this is usually after the fact when aspects in mundo have been examined. The explosion of TWA's flight 800 on July 17, 1996 is a classic example. The plane disappeared from radar at 8:48 p.m. EDT and most of it entered the water at 71º W 39' and 40º N 41'. The transiting Sun was applying to the opposition of Neptune in Capricorn in zodiaco within ¾º of longitude, which suggests sabotage. However, because Neptune had north celestial latitude, it rose in mundo before its longitude position.

For 8:48 p.m. at the crash coordinates, taking into account the Sun's RA and declination, it would have set with a sidereal time of 15h07m45s transiting the meridian. Neptune would have risen with 15h07m47s in the meridian. Two seconds of time is .008 of a degree.

The Sun had already set and Neptune had already risen at the time of the crash. This demonstrates again that planets don't have to be actually in the angles for the mundane relationships to operate. If their angular potential is exact for some parallel, they come into manifestation there as though they were on the angles. Very often this occurs within a few seconds of the precise contact in RA.

It is demonstrably clear after many years of observation, that natural and unnatural disasters time out exactly far more often in right ascension than they do in longitude. But since the Sun is paran square Neptune at some locale always, that fact begs the question, "Why there and then?"

The mundane opposition between the setting Sun and rising Neptune was only exact at the time of the crash at the parallel through the crash site, which fixes the latitude. Pluto applying to the meridian fixes the longitude approximately. Moreover Pluto was mundane square the Moon by less than 1º -which suggests being singled out, marked by fate and points to the place where the paran operates as the focus of attention.

Note that the Moon and Pluto were more than 99º in longitude in longitude. That is too far beyond a zodiacal square to be productive of anything but the mildest effects, if anything at all. However, precisely straddling the meridian of the crash site, which held 15h45m51s, were the alpha and beta stars in Serpentis (the Serpent) with RA 15h44m07s and 15h46m03s respectively. Unukalhai, the alpha star is, according to Ptolemy, of the nature of Mars and Saturn and gives accidents and violence, among other things.

In a larger sense, planetary conjunctions with the longest synodic periods define eras. Transits to those positions are symbolic of matters of great import and scale. The longest of all is the 493 year period between Neptune-Pluto conjunctions. The most recent one was in 1891 and 1892 for the exact conjunctions in longitude, and 1892 and 1893 for the exact conjunctions in RA.

The conjunction of Neptune and Pluto in the 1890's was the first time in many tens of thousands of years that it had occurred closely conjoined to Aldebaran and opposite Antares. These
alpha, or brightest stars in Taurus and Scorpio respectively, are both decidedly martial in effect, especially the latter.

Long before their conjunction in longitude, Neptune and Pluto appeared on the horizon together at the same moment, setting at very sparsely populated parallels. The setting conjunction in mundo descended out of the Arctic in the spring of 1880. Neptune and Pluto were separated by 15º of celestial longitude and almost 12º of celestial latitude. Yet they set together in mundo because of the geometry of the oblate spheroid which is this Earth.

bowser mundane fig 4 neptune pluto conj
The mundo conjunction took three more years to traverse the 6½º of terrestrial latitude down into the 50's. In the winter of 1883, when drawn up close in mundo in and near their stations, they set through the 59th parallel of north latitude when the meridian held 10h42m of sidereal time. By the summer when they were again in and near their stations, they set together in mundo at 53º north when the meridian held 10h48m.

This continued for the next twenty years, see-sawing back and forth across a few degrees of latitude each year (see figure 4). All the people born in the latitudes where the paran between Neptune and Pluto was operative had it as a natal aspect. So most of the generation that fought World War I had this combination. This reflects why the age cohort of the war casualties was born overwhelmingly in the 1880's, and 1890's.

The 19th century did not experience a general war after Napoleon's defeat at Waterloo in 1815, which is not to say that the world had been a quiet and peaceful place since then. There certainly had been many wars since that time. The worst of them (in the West) was the American Civil War, often called the first modern war. The Civil War killed more than 600,000. But there had never been a general war between fully industrialized powers before World War I. This war brought every major industrialized power into the conflict.  It also ranged over a more extensive territory than any other war before it, on both land and sea, and for the first time, in the air.

World War I began in the early morning hours of August 4, 1914, when the Germans entered Belgium with four armies, and with three more poised to invade France. The seven German armies hurled at France and Belgium contained the unprecedented invasion force of 1,500,000 men.

That morning, just after dawn, the Sun became involved in a mundane square with Uranus, precise to the second of arc. Both bodies were also within scant seconds of arc to the exact mundane T square with Antares on an adjacent angle. All this was through the Ardennes region of Belgium which was the invasion route. Yet the Sun and Uranus did not only configure Antares, the rival of Mars. Directly opposite the heart of the Scorpion was Aldebaran and the Neptune-Pluto conjunction of 1891.

Worse, transiting Pluto had moved into position such that it simultaneously engaged the natal Neptune-Pluto parans of most of the combatants through the parallels where fighting began, from Riga in the Baltic to the Mediterranean and even African parallels (where there was naval action off the African coasts).

The proximity of transiting Pluto to the rising positions in mundo of the long term Neptune-Pluto conjunction, varied

  • with the age of the natives,
  • the terrestrial latitudes of their births, and
  • where they served in their armed forces.

How Pluto could rise with the same sidereal time that it had twenty or more years befor?

The answer has mostly to do with Pluto's celestial latitude, declination and right ascension rather than its longitude. It should be borne in mind as well that the Neptune-Pluto conjunction, when it appeared on the horizon, was particular to a range of sidereal times and terrestrial parallels, in both hemispheres, which varied slowly over two decades.

Pluto's lone transit of a combination of which it was a part, and to places where it previously held sway twenty years before, is counter-intuitive in terms of longitude. But it makes perfect sense if one's orientation is the equator instead of the ecliptic. The people most affected, in the northern hemisphere, were those born between 1892 and 1901.

Because Pluto moves so slowly, it continuously engaged the natal Neptune-Pluto parans of millions for the duration of the war. It also extended beyond to include the influenza epidemic of 1919. This epidemic killed more than twice the number of people worldwide than the soldiers lost in combat during the war (but mainly at lower latitudes than the killing fields in northern France).

Pluto held millions in its grip via its contact with their natal Neptune-Pluto mundo conjunctions. And Uranus rose in mundo through Europe precisely mundane square Antares and Aldebaran through various contested latitudes. Saturn also rushed in to cut a swath in mundo through the parallels that held both the natal Neptune-Pluto mundo squares and transiting Pluto. Such a tremendous concentration of long term malefic energies intermingled is the signature of war.

The entire situation was periodically exacerbated by:

  • the entry of Mars into the combination,
  • the continued prominence of transiting Saturn and Uranus (especially the former) in mundane squares, and
  • some zodiacal configurations to the Neptune-Pluto natal combinations of the combatants and the Antares-Aldebaran axis.

During some ghastly periods in 1916 and 1917, the casualties were so great that governments feared revolution in the streets had the true figures been known.

At one point in 1916, the British sustained 60,000 casualties in a single day, 20,000 of whom were killed. Casualties of 50,000 in a week were not uncommon. Total losses are estimated at more than 9 million killed for all combatants in fifty-one months of combat.

The World War I astrological situation has immediate relevance for some parts of the world because another very much like it will form up again in 1998, 1999 and 2000.

In those years transiting Pluto will come to the conjunction of Antares, and oppose Aldebaran and the Neptune-Pluto conjunction of 1891 exactly. This occurs first in RA beginning in the winter of 1997-8, when Pluto will arrive at Antares in mundo in January 1998. Then in longitude in 1999.

Transiting Uranus in the winter of 1997-8 will be in the very same place in the middle of sidereal Capricorn that it held at the beginning of World War I, mundane square Antares, Aldebaran and the Neptune-Pluto conjunction of 1891.

In the 1990's, because Pluto contacts these two stars and the 1891 conjunction through the M.C.-I.C. axis, the relationship applies equally to all meridians, i.e. the entire planet.

World War I was symbolically triggered by the Sun, which is usually the chronocrator in mundane astrology. In January 1998 when the Sun is conjunct Uranus, the stage will be set essentially as it was in 1914.

Very few people are alive now who have the Neptune-Pluto conjunction as a natal condition either in mundo or zodiaco. But since we are still living in the modern industrial era invoked by the Neptune-Pluto conjunction of 1891, something particularly momentous, unwelcome and violent is very likely to affect it beginning barely more than a year from this publication date (December 1996).

Actually, with Jupiter in Saturn's house (sidereal Capricorn) throughout 1997, and with Saturn in one of Jupiter's houses (sidereal Pisces), a serious downturn in finance, production and trade will probably be well underway, in the U.S. at least. The maker for this is transiting Saturn, which will still be opposing its August 1982 bull market positions in the winter of 1997-98.

Transiting Neptune begins the year mundane square transiting Saturn through the high 30's and low 40's (of latitude). It will square the Mars-Jupiter conjunction of the 1982 bull market in the middle of the year. This is immediately followed by transiting Saturn opposing the bull market Mars-Jupiter conjunction.

Rising prices and expectations, especially the variety that are built out of hot air, are usually associated with Jupiter-Neptune. Jupiter-Mars is a better money making aspect, and sometimes Pluto-Jupiter-Mars can produce spectacular growth (the 1982 market was launched by it).

Slow, steady, solid growth is symbolized by Jupiter-Saturn. Saturn-Neptune is a bruising experience for hype artists and those who have been riding the wave generated by the brains and efforts of others. However, notwithstanding the damage that will have been done in 1997, the serious grief is likely to begin in January 1998, particularly the last week of the month, worsening in the summer.

Astrology...Mundane Astrology

Mundane Astrology

The Babylonians of the second millennium BC assumed that time was driven by a cyclic law that, at different moments, brought either the risk of war or the chance for peace.

Nicolas Campion, The Great Year

Mundane astrology is the most ancient form of astrology known and therefore has been named ‘The Mother of all Astrology’. The earliest recorded data is from Mesopotamia , mid- Second Millennium BC, approximately 3500 years ago.

Fig. 1

The above diagram is from Nicolas Campion’s book The Great Year, Astrology, Millenarianism and History in the Western Tradition. (Arakana, Penguin, 1994), a monumental work of historical theories about the character of the times in relation to cosmic factors and all the various related ideological constructions and philosophies. In short, a cultural treasure chest of all western theories, as well as those of non-western origin that were adopted by successive cultures, to determine their place in relation to the cosmos. That is mundane astrology. To illustrate this, I’ve used a quote from Campion’s book.

Simplicity

As indicated in the diagram above, it had already been noted in mid-Second-Millennium BC Mesopotamia, that the character of the times was determined by cycles of heavenly bodies. This principle was conceived as a wave-like motion related to processes such as the rise and fall of civilisations, war and peace. This simple representation of affairs would resurface more than a thousand years later in Greek philosophy e.g. Plato (The Great Year) and Aristotle.

Fig. 2

The following diagram (Fig.1 ) illustrates modern perception of an insight which originated in Ancient Mesopotamia.

The simplicity is unchanged. It relates to the cyclic link between two planets i.e. the synodic period. Between the conjunction and the opposition there is an outgoing phase (+) and between the opposition and conjunction an incoming phase (-). This can be compared to the phases of the Moon. Between New Moon and Full Moon the moon is in a waxing phase and subsequently waning. The guiding principles are somewhat less profoundly formulated than 3500 years ago but are easy to understand and the basic concept remains the same.
Naturally, the burning question now is whether the simplicity of this concept can be retraced throughout history.

In order to find out, I used my own version of Barbault’s ‘Cyclic Indication’. This is based on the cyclic link between the five outermost planets. Why these and not the inner planets? In astrology Pluto, Neptune and Uranus are known as ‘Collective Planets’. Their cycles correspond to long-term cultural- historic periods. Saturn and Jupiter are the so-called social planets which relate to social-political and economic developments.
These 5 planets form 10 cycles (waves) with one another, which is rather a lot to oversee. On the other hand, a single wave, as in Barbault’s Cyclic Indication would be too little. Therefore I have developed the following method.

The waves

Taking 2000 (March 21) as an example, we begin with the cyclic index of Uranus. To achieve this the distance (angle) is first calculated between Pluto and Neptune, that is, 53 degrees. To this we add the angular separations of Uranus-Pluto and Uranus-Neptune, respectively 66 and 13 degrees, obtaining a total of 132 degrees. The graph begins at 100 degrees; a point is set for Uranus at 132.
To obtain the cyclic index of Saturn, the angular separations of Saturn-Pluto, Saturn-Neptune and Saturn- Uranus are added to 132.
To acquire the cyclic index of Jupiter (i.e. Barbault’s original Cyclic Index) the same procedure is follo- wed, with these results:

Fig. 3

These calculations are made for each of the 300 years. The points are set out on a graph. Because the term ‘cyclic index of Uranus’ etc. is rather a mouthful, I will from now on use the terms Uranus wave, Saturn wave and Jupiter wave.
We can see on this graph how the Uranus wave drives the Saturn wave up and how this in turn strengthens or weakens the peaks and lows of the Jupiter wave.

Hard facts

As example I have chosen the worst possible scenario. .. War.
Here is an overview of the bloodiest wars between 1700 and 2000. Three waves are shown. Where they are linked by broken lines indicates when the three waves are simultaneously in the descending phase, parallel with the French Revolution Wars, the Napoleonic Wars and the two World Wars.

The Balkan Wars and the Spanish Civil War, which broke out at the beginning of the joint descent, are both considered as foreplay to the successive world wars.
When the wave is descending the respective planet is primarily moving towards its conjunctions with slower planets (incoming, or descending phase); when it rises then the planet is primarily moving towards its oppositions (outgoing or ascending phase).

In the graph below, one can see that in the past 90 years, during periods when the Jupiter wave starts to be descending, a serious war breaks out. Therefore it was not difficult for me to foresee the outbreak of war in 1991 and 2003. Those were the years in which the ‘Bush Wars’ began, in an attempt to secure the U.S. supply of oil from the Middle East.

Fig. 4

We are perhaps fortunate that it will only be in the ‘70’s of this century that all the waves will be jointly on the descent again.

The following figure shows all the European mega-wars from 1500 AD until now. Together these have been responsible for 95% of all deaths in all the European wars in this period!

Fig. 5

These 10 terrible catastrophes in the past are marked with 40 signs, either minuses or plusses. The two signs under UR relate to the Uranus-Pluto and the Uranus-Neptune cycles respectively. When all is well the plusses and minuses are in equilibrium, therefore for both there should be about 20, arbitrarily divided. However, here we see only 4 plusses as opposed to 36 times minus.

This extraordinary contrast led me to the conclusion: The worse the war, the more often it breaks out during the downward phase of the cyclic indexes (Catastrophe Effect).

Let us now look at the present time and the coming decade.

Planetary Composition

Intrinsic to the wave-movement are the aspects which provide the character of each moment during a cycle. These are registered in three columns (see fig. 6) which show the correlating cycles between PL, NE and UR. As well as using the major aspects I have also included the tension-filled minor aspects of 45 and 135 degrees, the half- and one and a half squares. The importance of this addition is clearly demonstrated by, for example, the resulting world crisis following the Wallstreet Crash at the end of 1929. Apparent at that time is an incoming half-square between Pluto and Neptune, an incoming square between Pluto and Uranus and subsequently an incoming one-and -a half square between Uranus and Neptune. Not only did the capitalistic world go bankrupt but we see that from that time onwards National Socialism (fascism) grew. During such aspects between the ‘Mystery Planets’ civilisation appears to enter a paranoid-schizophrenic phase, especially in countries in which frustration and demoralisation are greatest in such a period, as in Germany that was burdened by the harsh terms of the Treaty of Versailles.

Fig. 6

In these three columns with aspects a blue circle is marked twice. These indicate conjunctions, which always reveal a new cultural period. In 1965 it concerns the Uranus-Pluto conjunction and in 1993 the Uranus-Neptune conjunction. That of 1965 occurred simultaneously to the ‘60’s’, an anti-autoritarian, socially-critical, engaged period , full of happenings and resulting in a greater individual freedom. The Uranus-Neptune conjunction of 1993 marks the beginning of globalisation, the disappearance of frontiers through, among other factors, satellite communication (internet) and neo-conservative world trade system that has been dubbed ‘Mac World’.
Please note that these two conjunctions form the prelude to the development of the Pluto-Neptune cycle which began in 1892 in Gemini. It is since the Uranus conjunctions with these other two planets that there is mention of an ‘information society’.

Over the top

Following the prosperous second half of the 1990’s which coincided with unanimous rising wave moment, it all went wrong from the first oppositions involving a social and a mystery planet since many years. The opposition is at the top of the wave and thereafter can only go downwards.
In 2000 Jupiter reached its first opposition for 11 years, with Pluto, after which the soaring stock exchange fell dramatically. The end of optimisme.
In 2001 Saturn reached its first opposition for decades, also with Pluto. Subsequently an end came to political stability (Pim Fortuyn, The Twin Towers etc.)
It will not come as a surprise that Jupiter-Pluto plays a part in the greatest gambling-hall ever; the Stock Exchange, or that Saturn and Pluto dwell in the underworld of political power.

The Future

From 2003 we have been in the descending phase of the Jupiter wave. Since then the general uneasiness and distrust has only increased.
The results of the American foreign policy, in particular the occupation of former Mesopotamia , are extremely worrying. When we compare the current Jupiter and Saturn wave to that during the American intervention in Vietnam, strong similarities can be seen. If the USA is unable to end the conflict before 2007, when the Saturn wave begins to descend, it could worsen and end in hopeless tragedy. Not a new World War, since they have only developed when all the waves are on the descend and the next time that happens is in 2077.

The Uranus wave has been ascending since 1993. This coincides with an even greater speed in the technical innovations brought about since the 1965 and 1993 conjunctions. The outgoing square of Uranus to Pluto around 2013 may well cause an excess of tension, resulting in accidents in our technologically-controlled world. A new solution will only just have been presented before the next, even more advanced, system appears. Rather like what we are experiencing today, but then in manifold form.

In stark contrast with this scientific and technological creativity stands political power (descending Saturn wave) in whose reorganisation of society is introducing a form of 19th Century Darwinism (Survival of the Fittest), for which many are understandably afraid. In the meanwhile the sea level is rising, the pressure on the environment is increasing, oil reserves are being depleted, everyone is getting older and the stock exchange is stagnating for the coming two decades… However, life goes on , even if its course is not always of our chosing.

Fig. 7 – Very fertile and infertile constellations

It will have become clear that from the beginning of the 2020’s, a new period begins. Shown here in Fig. 7 is the striking constellation of 2026, formed by the outer planets.
In order to place this in historical perspective, it is necessary to have studied the longer cycles of the outer planets. A Pluto-Neptune cycle lasts almost 500 years. Therefore, to compare it to the preceding PL-NE cycle, it is a consideration of periods of thousands of years. The cycles of Uranus weaves throughout, a magnificent and powerful trio whose propelling rhythm accompanies the dramatic adventures of the human race.
Knowledge of the above, described in greater detail in my book ‘Waves’, is essential to any serious study of mundane astrology.

Depth and contrast

Here are some clarifying examples
Most times of catastrophe have 3 details in common:

Dark times:

1. An incoming negative aspect between Pluto and Neptune, or a conjunction which is vulnerable through its receptivity.
2. Tense (hard) incoming aspects of Uranus to Pluto and Neptune.
3. All (3) waves are descending.

The most fertile periods are those accompanied by the contrary:

Times of Enlightenment:

1. A harmonious, often outgoing aspect between Pluto en Neptune, preferably long-lasting, as in the present period.
2. Gentle, harmonious outgoing aspects of Uranus from Pluto and Neptune.
3. All the waves ascending.

Examples of both types:

Fig. 7 shows the constellation of a catastrophe, in the year 410 AD, with which an end came to a 1000 years of classic Greek-Roman culture ( with exclusion of Byzantium). This is an exception historically as is the constellation which occurs only once every 4000 years. (Uranus moves towards NE and PL at the same time, in the course of which NE shifts in the direction of PL and SA towards both.)

The second constellation of 114 AD shows exactly the opposite. Until now it has been the best constellation ever. However, that of 2026 is even more positive, since it will meet all three of the positive conditions as described above, in contrast with the constellation of 410 AD which reveals the seriousness of the three negative conditions.
History is written in between these extremes, between death (disintegration) and resurrection (renaissance), under the rhythmic guidance of our solar system.

Fay's Astrology...Pluto in Capricorn 2008-2023

Pluto in Capricorn 2008-2023

---------------------------------------

A Purging and Transformation of the Establishment

Pluto moving through Capricorn represents a time when powerful forces, previously seething under the surface, held down and out of sight, eventually erupt to transform what was, bringing major challenges, if not destruction (Pluto), to the establishment and the systems, structures, rules and regulations that conserve it (Capricorn). Such forces bring upheavals in the structures of society, in governments and the institutions that rule us, in protection and defence forces, in law and order, in banking and economic systems, in the organisations of business and industry, the established church, the police and armed forces, as they expose the evils and corruption inherent in such, in order to bring about deep change.  Business as usual will be a thing of the past as a major shake-up takes place in the way life is organised and regulated and in the way people are protected and defended.

The last time Pluto transited Capricorn was 1762-1777, the time of the American Revolution and the onset of the industrial revolution, which brought about massive upheavals in society. And the time before that was 1516-1532  which saw the rise of European colonialism of the ‘New World’ and with it global trade, and when the Reformation began, both bringing in deep changes to the world.

With Jupiter in Scorpio from October 2017 until November 2018 bringing extra enthusiasm to uncover any secrets, lies and corruption, things could get particularly difficult for any ‘evil-doers’ and is a time to get rid of all those corrupt and toxic snakes in the grass and eliminate what’s rotten in society. And Saturn joining Pluto in Capricorn from 21 December 2017 to 22 March 2020, adds to the difficulties and seriousness of this transformation, see Saturn in Capricorn, reaching a peak with the conjunction of Pluto and Saturn in Capricorn in January 2020 when we can expect some major crisis to bring society-changing upheaval and a death of the old ways. This conjunction signifies a time of serious weakening of the systems, when irreparable damage to the current establishment and status quo will be inflicted. We can expect something major to happen around this time, which will intensify the demise of the current systems, perhaps the fall of governments, mass protests, strikes, economic collapse or a war of some kind.

During this transformation process, signified by Pluto’s transit of Capricorn, the evils in established institutions are revealed, institutions that until now have been trusted and respected, and therefore obeyed, to maintain order and provide protection and well-being in society. Past secrets and lies are unveiled, corruption is exposed, the greed, lust, tyranny and depravity of those in respected positions is unearthed. Betrayals and dirty dealings by those we have trusted to rule us come to light. Scandals break out. Those who abuse their power and position are named and shamed and their reputations destroyed as the damage and trauma they have caused others is revealed. Cans of worms are opened up, ghosts of the past present themselves, skeletons in the closet come out and smoke-screens created to hide the truth are cleared. There is a powerful urge to purge what is rotten within, to unmask the demons and exorcise evil, often through violent challenge if not destruction and death. This is a time of karma and payback, when evil-doers in powerful positions get their come-uppance.

It is a time to get rid of pollutants, poisons and rubbish in society, to eliminate what is diseased and dirty in our current systems, when the urge to cleanse, declutter and detoxify the rules, the ruling elites and the ruling institutions that govern our lives becomes an important part of collective psychology. There is a tremendous drive for transparency and truth, for proper justice and laws, for clean, responsible government. Children born during this period will have a heightened awareness of the potential abuse of power by those in positions of authority so are likely to mistrust them and challenge them.

During this period of purging, while the establishment makes its desperate last ditch attempts to conserve itself, the powers that be use all the might of their resources to defend and justify the system as it is. There is an obsession with money, material wealth and profit-making, regardless of human suffering, a ruthless defence of aspiration and ambition, regardless of the consequences, and the need for a strict hierarchy, with an emphasis on people ‘knowing there place’ and doing as their superiors dictate. There will be a sense of a regression into Victorian values, where position and wealth define life chances, where the rich get richer and the elite rule, while the poor remain poor and disempowered, and have to suffer supposedly for the sake of society. A time of austerity, punishment and authoritarianism when the elite hold onto the last strings of their failing systems and use the might of law and order forces to clamp down on any dissenters and when strict hierarchical structures limit freedom and movement.

This is a time to scrutinise the way life is organised and the bodies and laws that regulate it. There is a purging of outdated systems and an end to old accepted ways of government and rule. The current structures of economic practices and employment practices as well as of banking, business and industry suffer upheavals, challenges and change. The systems of law and order, including the police, courts, prisons, justice system and protection forces also undergo transformation in order to be organised differently, more responsibly, and in the interests of the societies they are there to look after.

New elders arise to show that all is not gloom and doom and there is another way of running society, elders being people who have gained wisdom through experience, and who take their duty to society seriously (not necessarily old). Such ‘wise elders‘ emerge to reorganise society, to make just laws and to introduce new systems and rules. These are people who are respected and looked up to, a new breed of governors, who genuinely care for the well-being of society as a whole and therefore organise society in the interests of all. People who can be relied upon and trusted (as a child trusts and relies on a protective parent), to properly look after and protect people and to take the necessary responsibility. People who do not abuse their power for selfish gains. Such people have a mighty challenge on their hands as the old elites use all their wealth, position and power to demonise and destroy them. But there is such a tremendous ground swell of anti-establishment feeling, such a powerful emerging social consciousness, long sickened by the evils, the corruption and the poisons that have previously gone unchallenged, that the previously privileged and powerful and their not-fit-for-purpose institutions are eventually destroyed. The old order dies as new fledgling systems and organisations arise out of the turmoil, initially vulnerable and weak, but gaining strength and giving hope for the future.

SOME MANIFESTATIONS (so far …)

Challenges to traditional hierarchies and governments: Arab Spring, challenges to the EU including Brexit and the migrant crisis, challenges to western power in general. ISIS – violent challenge to the global status quo, with their ruthless determination to destroy what they see as evil in society. Kim Jong-un and North Korean nuclear weapons threaten the complacency of established world leaders and institutions like NATO. The international involvement in the wars and collapse in Syria and Libya. The collapse in Venezuela, the corruption of elections in Kenya. Independence and separatist movements threatening traditional nation states: the rise and success of the SNP (Scottish Nationalist Party) in the UK, the Kurds in Iraq demanding their own state of Kurdistan, the independence movement in Catalonia challenging the Spanish government and its constitution and elsewhere in Europe, Flanders, Lombardi and Veneto in Italy, all such movements challenging the unity of established states as well as the EU (also see Uranus in Taurus which augurs the breaking down of previous territories and borders and new ones being established.) A purging in Saudi Arabia of corrupt ministers and princes. Demonstrations all over the world including in Russia and China, unheard of before, against the corruption in governments and the ruling elites. And the backlash from the establishment attempting to suppress such movements often violently and brutally, such as the police (supposed to protect citizens) violently removing people attempting to vote in Catalonia’s independence referendum, the leader Puigdemont threatened with a 30 year prison sentence. Activists in such movements, particularly the leaders, being punished, threatened, imprisoned and demonised, the mainstream media supporting the establishment making out such movements are bad for society.

Upheavals in economies and banking: 2008 collapse of banks and banking crisis, through toxic debts, greed and dodgy dealings of bankers and lack of regulation by governments of the banks – all exposed. Including the loan to Greece from the EU with its impossible repayments (against the democratic wishes of the people). Revelation of the obscene amassing of wealth by those at the top, excessive executives’ and bankers’ pay and bonuses. Greed and cheating, with complicity of governments and tax laws, exposed,  avoidance of taxes by big business, off-shore tax havens, MPs’ expenses scandals; corruption in governments exposed.

Wikileaks, a website set up to allow whistle-blowers to release anonymous documents, has been publishing secret documents related to governments, intelligence agencies, the military, big corporations, the global economy, international politics and wars to reveal corruption and dodgy dealings and truths previously kept hidden.  exposing for example unarmed Iraqis being gunned down by an American helicopters, the true human cost of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, extrajudicial killings in Kenya, a report on toxic waste dumping on the Ivory Coast, Guantanamo Bay detention camp procedures and material involving large banks. Julian Assange, the founder of Wikileaks, a hero to anti-establishment activists, has been threatened by various governments and demonised as a criminal or terrorist by the establishment. Chelsea Manning, a US soldier, leaked information about the US military to WikiLeaks and was jailed for 7 years for espionage.

The Panama Papers exposed the dirty secrets of those at the top and in ruling institutions and has caused trouble for national leaders around the world. They revealed the secret wealth of the elites, the misappropriation of government funds and money stached in offshore companies in tax-havens and in properties in London (driving up house prices there to obscene levels and destroying local communities, which the UK government has been complicit in). For example, Pakistans’s prime minister in power for 30 years ousted for corruption, fraud and forgery. Iceland’s prime minister had to resign because of hiding millions behind a secretive offshore company and links to investments in failed banks. The father of UK prime minister David Cameron found to have run an investment fund that did not pay any UK tax on its profits. In Russia a $2billion network of deals and loans that benefitted some of the country’s most powerful people, including friends of Putin. In China 8 senior members of the Communist Party revealed to have used off-shore companies (the government subsequently blocked access to the Panama papers online.) In Australia hundreds of names and billions of dollars in tax evasion investigations. Evidence of such wrong-doing all over the world.

The Paradise Papers published 2017 revealing further dodgy dealings and investments in offshore tax havens by the super rich to avoid taxes, many of which are legal but questionably immoral (see Jupiter in Scorpio) and question the laws and systems that allow this. The Queen having £10 million invested offshore …  more still to be revealed.

The exposure of the manipulation by global elites and ‘banksters’ of national governments and global organisations, and their power to destabilise national economies and currencies and sponsor wars to destabilise and destroy nation states, to pollute the environment and destroy bio-diversity in order to retain their power as global corporate giants – the oil, bio-tech, pharmaceutical, drugs and arms industries.

In the UK – abuse of power and corruption within police and government during the miners’ strike and Hillsborough disaster exposed 2016. Failure in duty of care of high officials exposed by investigations into the Grenfall Tower fire (2017). Sexual abuse by those at the top exposed, those in highly respected positions – the church, politicians, army, police, celebrities. Complicity of the police and other officials in not bringing to justice those responsible exposed. For example, in the Rochdale and other abusive sex rings cases the victims (teenage girls) were ignored  for years by those who should have been looking after them, who were more concerned with being judged racist and not politically correct (as the majority of the abusers were Pakistani) than with their proper function of carrying out the law to protect the welfare of children.

November 2017 A purging of Westminster of those abusing their power and committing sexual harassment and assault and new systems to address this agreed by the leaders of the political parties. see Jupiter in Scorpio

Regression into Victorian type of mentality – since the banking crisis of 2008 (when Pluto first entered Capricorn) there has been an agenda throughout the world of austerity and harshness, mean and punishing.  A rise in the attitude that the poor, ill and disadvantaged  are ‘undeserving’ of help and support – its their own fault; including the refugees and migrants from the east and Africa – allowed to suffer or die in their attempt to cross the Mediterranean. Blaming people for what they are suffering instead of those in power taking responsible action. Suffering accepted as part of the natural order. Stark differences between the rich and the poor, the advantaged and disadvantaged.  Cuts in social and health care, wages, benefits and public services, NHS in crisis, the rise and necessity of foodbanks. People working but still cannot afford to rent or buy a place to live or feed themselves. Complicity of governments in the housing crisis. Increase in insecure and poor working conditions, zero hours contracts, temporary contracts, reductions in pay, reductions in breaks, forced overtime etc. Abuse of employment laws eg Sports Direct, JD Sports, Asos and Boohoo etc. TUC found 3.2 million workers are in precarious jobs (2016). Deterioration of workers’ rights and law changed to limit trades unions and the right to strike.

Traditional political parties dying out: wipe-out of the UK Liberal Party in 2015 elections; right and left parties in France with the election of Macron; Brexit vote 2016 contrary to most mainstream politicians who wanted to remain in the EU.  Donald Trump elected president in USA affecting the world order (also see Uranus in Aries ie shocking emergence of unexpected leaders). In Britain, Jeremy Corbyn, elected (twice) for leader of the Labour Party, leading to divisions and break down of the Labour Party as it traditionally was. His rise in popularity as an elder, (an MP of many years with great experience and integrity) who has constantly and consistently argued for peoples’ rights, against the powers that be, despite being criticised and maligned by the traditional media and those who want to maintain the system as it is.

The power of traditional media being challenged by the internet, alternative news websites and social media, so people no longer have to rely on the biased views of the media moguls like Rupert Murdoch for the news and can form new protest groups and organisations.

With transiting Pluto conjoining natal Pluto in the horoscope of the United States over the next couple of years I find this piece about Pluto's influence very timely in view of what is going on in the United States at this time...Pluto was last in Capricorn from 1762 to 1778. This was the time of the American Declaration of Independence, the Boston Tea Party, Watt's invention of the steam engine and the reign of  Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette. The Industrial revolution was in full swing. The rigidity of many governments of the time led to rebellions and uprisings in later years.
