LIVE THE ANSWER NOW – Free Neville Goddard Lecture
January 15, 1968

Every fact is a dream made visible, so I invite you to live as though your dream were already a fact! I am convinced that every dream (desire) I have dared to live in the now has gradually and unnoticed blossomed into fact in my life.

I also know, not only from personal experience but from eternal vision, that the spiritual states of the soul are eternal. That like a traveler, individual man passes through states but the states remain forever.

Without the help of any man or government you could lose everything you possess and become dependent upon society. All you need do is enter the state of poverty. Or again: without asking for help you could assume wealth by occupying the state. Remain faithful to it and you will discover that the state has its own way of externalizing itself. You must, however, give the desired state occupancy.

How do you occupy a state? By asking yourself how you would feel, what you would see, hear, touch, taste, and smell if your dream were real. Take time to set the stage. Being the star of your production, place yourself center stage, then allow a friend to enter and see you in your new state. Write the script – the words he would say when he sees you. Feel his touch.

Clothe yourself with the reality of the state you have just created in your imagination. You need not ask anyone’s permission or help, but moving into the new state in your imagination, simply remain there until you feel its reality. Then let the feeling go its way toward fulfillment.

A friend recently wrote, saying: “Not understanding why I read the Bible but never attend church, a friend brought a group of missionaries from the Mormon church to the house to convert me. Regretfully, I invited them in, and no matter what I said they would not listen. Rather, they expressed their own opinions and would not let me speak.

“That night – while reviewing my day – I thought of these people, and wondered how anyone could give such love, devotion, sincerity, time, energy, and money, to what I called `reverent baloney.’

“Dwelling upon that thought, I fell asleep and dreamed I was in a very strange and barren land, with craters everywhere. Hundreds of people were walking down a long roadway, leaving behind a girl, who was possessed by a screaming voice. Curious there, as I am here, I wanted to see the girl. When I saw her pity poured forth from me. I sat beside her, put my arms around her to offer sympathy, when suddenly the voice began to scream from within me. Then the girl arose, and walked away completely cured as I awoke.”

My friend was shown how discriminating one must become. The moment you contemplate something you become the very thing you behold. Entertaining a state in sympathy, my friend entered it. That night her heavenly Father taught her a great lesson. That no matter how awake one may be in this world, no one is exempt from falling into a state.

Blake understood this truth when he said: “From this I realize that neither the just nor the wicked are in a supreme state, but to be every one of them states of the sleep which the soul may fall into in its deadly dreams of good and evil, when it left paradise following the serpent.” The serpent, the wisest of God’s creations, is the personification of God’s wisdom and power. It was he who told the woman: “You will not surely die, but will become as the gods, knowing good and evil.”

Entering a world of death, you will seem to die to those who cannot follow you – but not to yourself. Instead, you are restored to an unaccountably young body. You may leave an old body with missing hair and teeth, to find yourself in a healthy, new body with your hair and teeth intact. This I know to be true, for my vision is open and I have seen those who have departed this life. I know they are not gone, but are restored to wear a new, young, and healthy body.

Now, a state may be entered either deliberately or unknowingly, but you are going to become what you contemplate. The world’s wise men believe we are heading for the end, but its climax has already occurred. While on the cross, these words were spoken: “It is finished.” This age has already ended and an entirely new and different age – into which we are all moving – has begun.

To Blake, space was a woman, while everything in it was Man, and Man was God. Blake saw the world as a play of six thousand years, with a door opening to Eden every two hundred years. We think we are moving in one direction, yet everything is taking place now, and every two hundred years an individual can enter the New Age.

Let me now tell you of a vision the lady had, who shared the dream of the screaming girl. One night as she was mentally reviewing her day, a long table appeared before her inner eye. A judge, robed in black and wearing a white wig, was sitting at one end holding a gavel. Looking directly at her, the judge raised his gavel, lowered it to the table and proclaimed: “The incurrent eyewitness.”

The word incurrent means giving passage to a current that flows inward, such as a sponge when placed in water. This lady has been conditioned by Divine Providence to receive spiritual communion. Whether she likes it or not she will be compelled to receive it, for she is already awake! She will bring back vision after vision paralleling scripture, for scripture only records finished history.

Blake described the Bible as: “The Divine written law of Horeb and Sinai,” which is the Old Testament. “And such the Holy Gospel of Mount Olivet and Calvary,” which is the New Testament.

Every conceivable part that Man could play is openly described in the Old Testament, for each individual recorded there represents a state of this age. The New Testament describes the entrance into the New Age. It reads as though it happened to one person, as a biography; but the New Testament records states which unfold in the individual.

Blake’s poem, “Little Boy Lost,” records a true revelation:

“Nought loves another as itself,
Nor venerates another so.
Nor is it possible for thought
Greater than itself to know.
And Father, how can I love you
Or any of my brothers more?”

When the priest heard this, he took the little boy by the hair, and screamed: “What a fiend is here!” Then he burned the little boy, as he had burned others before.

The little boy spoken of here is everyone in this world. I know, for it is impossible to transcend a thinking being. Therefore, it is impossible for a thinking being to know a thought greater than self.

If God – the creator of all life – wants to be known and loved by you, He must become you, for He cannot discover any other than Self. That is why it was necessary for God to become as you are – that you may be as He is; for if God did not become you, you could never know Him.

Being a thinking being, you are unable to know a thought greater than yourself; for God – the Father of all life – became individualized in order for you to discover that you are He. And because God is a Father, he must have a child. Therefore, one day God’s son, David, will call you Father and your true identity will be revealed. There is no other way to discover your Fatherhood.

how_to_feel_it_real_manifest_the_impossibleI urge you to dream nobly. Although your dream may seem impossible, invite it into your consciousness by feeling it is real.

Wear this feeling as you would a suit of clothes, and persist until the feeling takes on the tones of reality. Do that, and in a way no one knows, your desire will appear as an eruption of your continuous thought.

Your desire started in motion when you wore it. Its appearance is simply a hidden continuity which came to the surface. Dwell upon a thought, and you will realize that it is not original. That the thought itself is complete and therefore every thought is Divine plagiarism!

Enter a mood and watch the thoughts that come to you while there. If you want to be known, get into the mood by feeling recognized as you move about. Then as the feeling becomes familiar you will be amazed how things will reshuffle themselves and you will get the publicity you desire. It may not be very flattering, but if you really want to be known, you will be.

“Whatever you desire, believe you have received it and you will.” Knowing what you want, assume you have it and let no one divert you. Do your father’s will, believing in the feeling of your wish fulfilled. Try it, for this simple principle will not fail you. But remember: you are its power, as it does not operate itself. I can tell you how to move into another state, but you must move into it. No one can do it for you. You see, states are permanent and it is up to you to get out of the state you are now in if it is undesirable to you.

One day a lady in New York City came to see me regarding her stomach problems. While she was there we talked of higher things, and after the silence she returned to her home on Staten Island. Arriving there, she went into a favorite German restaurant and ate all the food she hadn’t been able to eat in years, with no ill effects. I didn’t give this lady any pills. I don’t even know what a stomach looks like! I simply got this lady to move from the state that had the bad stomach!

Leave the state containing poverty and move into the state containing wealth, and wealth will take on reality. This room has reality and substance because you are thinking from it. Think of a room, however, and it is but a shadow. Think of a state and it seems a mere possibility. But enter it by thinking from the state, and it is the only reality. Blake said: “If the spectator could only enter into the image in his Imagination; if he could make a friend and companion of his image, he would rise from the grave and meet the Lord in the heavens.”

Now, buried in a state, you are a spectator of other states. But if you will rise from your present state and bury yourself in another, you will express it. If you can be what you want to be, why not become it? Why sit in a state you dislike and argue, when you can move into another state in your imagination? But once you have moved into the state of your fulfilled desire, don’t be like Lot’s wife. Don’t look back at your former state and preserve it, for salt is a preservative.

Every character in the Bible is a state of consciousness that you, an individual, will pass through, for you are immortal. Having descended into a world of death, you pass through states; but you cannot die. Blake tells us: “The oak is cut down by the ax and the lamb is stayed by the knife, but their forms eternal remain forever.

Step out of this garment and you will instantly step into another. Ninety per cent of those who leave are totally unaware of what has happened. Observing their passage, we think they have died, but they do not die to themselves. They do not even recognize the change, any more than you do when you are asleep. The moment you become aware that you are dreaming, you wake up. But if you do not awaken it is because you have passed through the gate we call death, to continue your dream.

In your night dream you take everything for granted – until you begin to become aware that you are dreaming. If you find yourself waking, try to grab a solid object, like a post – but not an animal, no matter how tame he appears to be. Hold the object and will yourself to wake up, and you will awaken in your dream to find yourself in a world which is just as real as this one.

When this happens don’t get panicky, as you will come back. Instead, if you have any red blood in you investigate the world you find yourself in, and you will discover the people there are just as stupid, just as ambitious, and just as sound asleep as they are here. I have been shut out of this world many times, to return to find this body cataleptic for maybe twenty or twenty-five seconds before I could animate it again. If sometime I do not get back, the doctors will cut up the body to see why I died. They will come to some conclusion; but if they are honest with themselves, they will know that there was no physical reason for my death. I simply left and did not return.

But while you are here, why not live well? I think we will all agree that it is easier living when we have wealth than when we are poor. I have no desire to have lots of things, but if anything can be mine by the simple act of assumption, why not assume it? No power on earth can stop you from imagining. The morning paper records what happened, but they do not tell you the cause. Who knows who is dreaming what is happening today?

Two years ago I watched the Kentucky Derby on television. Willie Shoemaker was riding a horse which was favored to win. The night before the race, the owner of the horse had a dream in which he saw Shoemaker – leading by lengths – misjudge the finish line and ride the saddle to ease the horse too soon.

That is exactly what happened. Shoemaker, a truly great jockey, misjudged the finish line, then – realizing his mistake – he could not get enough energy again to win the race and therefore lost it. But who controlled Shoemaker’s behavior? The owner told Shoemaker the dream before the race and he listened attentively; then, in the physical event, he couldn’t do anything about it. Shoemaker took the brunt. He was condemned and received his sentence, which was a financial loss to him; but Shoemaker didn’t have the dream – the owner of the horse did!

You do not have to have a dream of the night to influence the behavior of others. You can dream during the day and influence them, as everyone is contained within you. “All that you behold, though it appears without it is within, in your Imagination of which this world of mortality is but a shadow.” (William Blake) If everyone is contained within you, you do not need their permission to be used to externalize your dream! The owner used the horse, the jockey and everyone who bet on the event, to externalize his dream. He entered the state unknowingly but couldn’t escape its effect. He lost the race in the same manner in which he had envisioned it.

You can sit quietly and enter a glorious dream. If it’s shadowy, you are not in it. Persist until you enter it, and it will become the only reality. Live in the state of your fulfilled desire now, knowing that in a way unknown and unnoticed by you it will erupt to become an objective fact.

Take the challenge of scripture: “Whatever you desire, believe you have received it and you will.” Dare to believe you have what reason and your senses deny. Persist in your assumption and it will harden into fact. Try it and see! And remember: the Father who became you is speaking to you through the medium of dream and revealing himself in vision, for this world is His play!

One day you will leave this play, knowing you are God the Father who conceived it all. Beginning as the one God, we fell as the gods. But we will return to the one God, for it takes all of us to form the Lord. “Hear O Israel, the Lord our God, is one Lord.”

Take the challenge of scripture and assume the feeling of the wish fulfilled – not only for yourself, but for your family and friends. When you imagine for another, you are really giving it to yourself, as there is no other. The whole vast world is only yourself pushed out.

Now let us go into the silence.

Thomas Troward

Thomas Troward

The scope of what Thomas Troward (1847-1916), a.k.a. Judge Troward has contributed to the subjects known generally by terms such as Metaphysics, New Thought, etc., is, for all practical purposes, beyond measure; not only in terms of what has been recorded and preserved to this day, but also in terms of the direction or directions in which those subjects have moved, as a result of said contribution. And this can be explained via the proposition that there is no limit to Thought, except whatsoever limits are set by the conceptions or beliefs of Man - whether individually or collectively. Put another way, if he cannot conceive or believe in a thing, Man does not think about that thing, except in virtually all instances to say (to the effect) "it cannot be".

What shall follow from this point is an endeavor by this Author to highlight only a few of what may amount  to be perhaps the most significant revelations which Thomas Troward discovered (albeit in his own way) in the course of his own pursuit of Truth, and, as stated before, has been preserved for those generations which came after his time on Earth. The intent at this point is merely to highlight these points, rather than to take any visitor, step-by-step, through any argument intended to convince them that these revelations have sufficient foundation for acceptance. Such an endeavor is best done by anyone aspiring to, so-to-say, "know the truth for themselves, and not based upon someone else's account".

In that respect, perhaps the single most significant revelation which can be credited to Thomas Troward - and one which, on careful elaboration, encompasses virtually all others - is an Understanding of many concepts to be found in the Bible, and the corresponding emancipation from the influence of "traditional" conceptions, which occurs as a result of gaining this new understanding.

Briefly, there are many different ways to interpret the contents of the Bible, in much the same way as there exists many differing and varying off-shoots and branches of Christianity, and a prolonged debate could indeed take place regarding whose interpretation is right or true. This is perhaps of far more significance than might appear on the surface, because, to paraphrase an old maxim, "for each one of us, our beliefs constitute our realities". And that maxim is perhaps most true when it comes to the interpretation of the knowledge to be found in so-called "sacred literature" - whether it be the Bible or any other book. It was hinted previously in the discussion on The Bible, and is well worth repeating that, in times past, the only interpretation of sacred literature (again, irrespective of the particular school of religion) that was generally accepted was that which proceeded forth from the religious leadership, and the masses were generally encouraged (if not conditioned) to accept what was imparted without question. Fortunately, the time of dogmatism has effectively passed, although some might still hold to it - and, as far as this Author's point of view is concerned, that is a person's right, in much the same way as it is another's right to objectively question a particular interpretation of scripture.

So, how can one determine whether a particular interpretation of any purported "divine revelation" is true or valid? One suggested way was actually put forth by Thomas Troward himself; namely that, by thinking over the message put forth, it should present to the inquirer an intelligible sequence of Cause and Effect. And the recognition and realization of the intelligible sequence, in all likelihood, can only occur, for any person who has, so-to-say, reached the stage in their own mental development where they recognize and realize that they must and should think for themselves, rather than let others (whether directly or indirectly) do their thinking for them. As to how any person could recognize the truth if or when it presents itself before them, it can be put forth that such is accomplished via the mental faculty known as Intuition. And, while the Bible itself might not use the word "Intuition", it contains therein a statement, which, on analysis, amounts to the same thing:

"When the Spirit of Truth comes, He will guide you into all truth."  - Gospel of John, chapter 16, verse 13 (New Living Translation 2007)

And while there is ample evidence that he is neither the first one, nor the only one to have done so, a careful study of Thomas Troward's writings will reveal to the earnest inquirer, other significant revelations, which, once uncovered, assimilated and applied, enable and empower the inquirer to, so-to-say, live, move and have their being, in a totally different world, than the one in which they previously operated; many of which he has uncovered within the contents of the Bible, as well as from other sources. In no specific order, some of those revelations are:

The interpretation of the proposition that Man is "... made in the image and likeness of GOD", refers specifically to the Mind of Man being an individualization or miniature reproduction of Universal Mind, and therefore, the thought or mental action of Man exercises an identical quality of Creative Power - refer to the discussion on Mind Power.

The exposition of the working of the Human Mind, based primarily upon philosophical reasoning, and which had been subsequently substantiated by numerous experiments in hypnosis - refer to the discussion on The Subconscious Mind.

The postulation that the Evolution of Mankind (i.e., unfolding of the infinite quantum of possibilities within Man) is far from being complete at the present time, and that any and all further Evolution beyond our present position can only take place on a strictly individual basis - refer to the discussion on Outward Manifestation.

The proposition that what Man generally refers to as "Evil" is NOT something brought into being by some supposedly sentient and malevolent entity (commonly referred to as "the Devil"), but rather, is a perfectly natural outcome of the misdirected use of Man's creative instrument of Thought - refer to the discussion on Good and Evil.

There are actually many other such revelations, which may be credited to the work of Thomas Troward, but it is felt that, as an introduction to what he has contributed, the five specific items listed here will suffice, and those interested in discovering more may be guided to sources of further research and reference.

Interestingly enough, and according to at least two commentators who apparently knew him well enough to make such statements, Thomas Troward appeared not to regard his particular viewpoints on these and other subjects as necessarily belonging to any or all of the schools of thought that were considered as popular or of interest in his day - such as (in no specific order): Christian Science, Mental Science (N.B., that term is generally no longer connected with metaphysics in our present time), New Thought, or Metaphysics. Among the biographical and/or semi-biographical records of his life and work which survive to this day, all indications are that Troward was generally content to regard his viewpoints simply as "Higher Thought", and this position was not necessarily established by himself, but by others who discovered and encountered his writings. Expressed another way, the understanding imparted by Thomas Troward's explanations and expositions on these and other subjects that may be said to have resonated with others, who in their own way might be considered "seekers after Truth", may explain why his writings spread to a wide audience, not only in his native England, but crossing the Atlantic to the United States, and even to other parts of the world. It is also reflected in the observation that his works are generally still highly regarded in the various circles of New Thought and Metaphysics which are in operation today.

No doubt some discerning visitors will note that there is a consistent indication - not only in the contents of this page, but that may also be found in other discussions located on this web site - of some inter-connection between those tents generally held by the school known as New Thought and the teachings and instructions that may be found within the Bible. From a particular perspective, this may not be so surprising, as it is generally accepted (both in Troward's lifetime, as well as even now), that the Bible can aptly be considered "a storehouse of knowledge, and a guide to life" - but on the other hand, the accuracy of such a claim may well depend upon a person's understanding of what the book contains. In one of his (posthumous) writings, Thomas Troward intimates that certain revelations that he has discovered within the Bible, he has not found in any other religious or philosophical teaching, with which he claimed any acquaintance. Interestingly enough, the biographical records of his life indicate that Troward devoted much of his free time (i.e., away from his occupation) to the reading and study of the sacred literature of many religions, so that there may indeed be ample grounds for taking such a position. This is not at all to establish a fixed position that such revelations as Troward indicates are to be found in the teachings of the Bible are not at all located within the writings of other religions. Perhaps they may be there, merely awaiting their discovery - but an investigation of such a scale may amount to a topic by itself.

As regards an inclination or desire on anyone's part to study and gain an apprehension of the writings and wisdom of Thomas Troward, this Author volunteers, based upon his own experience, that it is no more different than an endeavor to take up the study of almost any other author or writer of that time who dealt with the same subject matter. There is a particular opinion that may still be, so-to-say, in circulation, which, when all is said and done, amounts to a suggestion, that it is a difficult endeavor to read Troward's works - let alone study them. However, and again based on personal experience, this Author volunteers that, the likely way to comprehend the contents of Thomas Troward's writings seems to be to go through them slowly and (one might say) deliberately, with the aim of discovering the premises at the core of his postulations, and then carefully following his course of argument from said premises to his established position on the subject.

Although it may not be immediately visible on the surface, perhaps the following excerpt from the foreword of one of his posthumous works may substantiate (if not summarize) the totality of Thomas Troward's contribution to the fields of study previously referred to:

"In his magic mind the unfathomable revealed its depths and the illimitable its boundaries; Metaphysics took on the simplicity of the ponderable, and Man himself occupied a new and more dignified place in the Cosmos. Not only did he perceive clearly, but he also possessed that quality of mind even more rare than deep and clear perception, that clarity of expression and exposition that can carry another and less-informed mind along with it, on the current of its understanding, to a logical and comprehended conclusion."
- Paul Derrick, excerpted from the Foreword to: "THE LAW AND THE WORD" (published c. 1917)

It is such things as this which, in this Author's opinion, and possibly in that of others, which ultimately elevate the revelations to be found in Metaphysics, New Thought and other kindred subjects, from mere abstract and/or theoretical statements carrying little or no use in the so-called "real world", to the place and position of sound, credible, and more significantly, practical truths, which any and every person who appreciates and apprehends them, can put to legitimate use, in virtually any and every area of life with which they are concerned, and more significantly, via proper application of said truths, can and will realize desired results in their various endeavors.

And for that, those who indeed appreciate and apprehend them, may consider themselves to be grateful.

The Bible

The Bible

The Bible is one of those books (or more precisely, collections of books) that carries a distinctive characteristic which separates it from many other books, except perhaps those of a similar nature; namely, it can be considered as one of the most mis-understood of all books, and on the other hand, it can be revealed to be - literally - one of the most comprehensive and all-inclusive sources of reference and knowledge. The position taken by any person regarding the Bible can be shown to ultimately depend on their interpretation, appreciation and understanding of its contents, with particular reference (so far as this particular discussion is concerned) to certain subjects which, according to a particular interpretation and understanding, can be shown to be more closely inter-related and inter-connected than most people realized; the subjects in question being (in no specific order): Metaphysics, New Thought, Science and Religion.

In the personal experience of this Author, that which may be considered the traditional or conventional interpretation of the Bible might reveal very little (if any) inter-relation or inter-connection with the subjects previously listed. Moreover, history and experience has shown clearly that, in the majority of instances, the traditional or conventional interpretation is very rarely challenged or questioned - even objectively. There are also many instances recorded to various degrees throughout history showing that, more often than not, the challenge or questioning of the established interpretation of the Bible was, at times, often met with various actions intended to discourage others from taking a similar stance - ranging from threats of expulsion and ostracization, to acts of violence against those accused or considered guilty of so-called heresy. Fortunately, in this Information Age, such reactions to intelligent inquiry regarding the meaning of the Bible have become the exception, rather then the rule.

In the words of one renowned authority, who will likely be introduced in a subsequent discussion, the Bible may be considered a handbook of instruction with regard to Man appreciating and understanding the nature and being of the Original Creative Power (Spirit, Universal Mind, GOD or any other name), as well as his learning about and how to use and not to use his creative instrument of Thought. On that basis, it is a new and different interpretation of its contents (some of which was touched upon in the previous discussion on New Thought), which makes the preceding an actual working fact, which the individual can apply and use in any area which concerns themself.

It would likely require an extensive discourse to lay out in full the entirety of the inter-relation and inter-connection that the Bible carries within it, in relation to the subjects referred to previously, and such a discourse has already been laid out elsewhere. All that this discussion is intended to do is to highlight just a few of what this Author considers some of the most significant points, regarding the meaning of the Bible, from the standpoint of metaphysics and similar subjects.

One such point is contained in the discourse between Jesus of Nazareth and a Samaritan woman (recorded in the Gospel according to St. John), where Jesus made the declaration that: "GOD is Spirit." (chapter 4, verse 24). It may be interesting to note that, according to the so-called authorized version of the Bible in circulation within the English-speaking world at one period in history, the wording of the phrase was stated as: "GOD is a spirit.", which conveys a different meaning, than the preceding one. The wording of the first phrase ("GOD is Spirit.") can be traced out to convey the meaning the "GOD" is another name for that infinite and eternal entity which, in previous discussions, has generally been referred to as Spirit or Universal Mind.

The preceding point ("GOD is Spirit" versus "GOD is a spirit") also illustrates another pertinent issue, and one which anyone seeking to understand the contents and meaning of the Bible would do well to apprehend. It is indeed debatable as to whether a clear and definite line of progression can be traced out, from the earliest written collections of sacred scriptures (likely written in the Israelite language of that day), through their subsequent translation into Greek (commonly referred to as the Septuagint), and ultimately, to their further translation into English to constitute what was at that time classified as the Authorized King James Version (c. 1611). From an objective standpoint, and notwithstanding any sacred significance attributed to both Jewish and Christian scriptures, such a time period constituting (literally) thousands of years leaves room for variations of virtually all degrees to find their way into the so-called original text; not necessarily as a deliberate intent to alter the original message, or to conceal some insight. To paraphrase the words of one who studied and presented his own interpretation of what the Bible has to teach, the way to understand the Bible is not to pick and choose select texts out of the book, interpret them literally and take a particular stance based on said literal interpretation, but to study the entire book, and thereby become aware of the truth of the entire message being conveyed.

Another significant point is the proposition which has its root in the first chapter of the Book of Genesis, and which was first highlighted in the discussion on Mind Power; namely, the proposition which defines Man as "... made in the image and likeness of GOD":

"And GOD said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth."

- Genesis 1:26 to 28 (King James Version)

Now, if one puts that together with the previous declaration that GOD is Spirit, then it can be traced out that the likeness between GOD and Man is not "physical", i.e., reflected in Man's physical body, but rather, it is actually a spiritual likeness, expressed in the proposition that Man is actually an individualization of Spirit. If we refer to the alternate name of the Original Power as Universal Mind, then it can also be established that there also exists a mental image and likeness between Man (Individual Mind) and GOD (Universal Mind). Coupling the preceding with another point - namely the opening verse of the first chapter of the Book of Genesis ("In the beginning, GOD (Spirit) created the heavens and the earth." - chapter 1, verse 1), it is thereby revealed that the physical universe and all that it contains was created or brought into existence by some action performed by Spirit. And, as stated previously in the discussion on Mind Power, the only action of which Spirit or Universal Mind is capable is Thought, which itself leads to the conclusions that Thought possesses Creative Power, and that the same exact quality of Creative Power is present in the mind of Man, as may be said to be present in Universal Mind. The preceding amounts to an affirmation of of the inherent Creative Power of Man's Thought - a point which has been expounded and presented to those who have explored and studied any of the various schools of metaphysics which have ever existed, or which are in existence even today.

Yet another point that is not only to be found in the Bible, but is also advocated as a foundational tenet in virtually all systems of New Thought is what might aptly be called the singleness or unity of GOD of Universal Spirit. Said point is expressed in the Bible via many verses; one such is highlighted here:

"There is none beside Me ... I am GOD, and there is none else"

- Isaiah chapter 45, verses 21 and 22.

This can be shown to correspond to the proposition that Spirit or Universal Mind is the one and only source, origin and root of all that exists (refer to the discussion on Universal Mind). In fact, careful consideration would reveal, from the standpoint of metaphysics, that the unity of Spirit, and the Creative Power of Man's Thought, can be shown to be two fundamental propositions that are constantly put before the reader or student of the Bible, in a variety of ways, in order to, so-to-say, drive the point home.

And while there are many others, only one other point shall be highlighted here, which was first mentioned back in the discussion on Good and Evil. The visitor may opt to do the research for themself, and if they choose to do so, that is their right, but, arising out of the postulation of the Unity of Spirit (i.e., that GOD is One), it can be put forward that that which Man refers to as "Evil" cannot have its origin in Spirit or GOD, nor is it some sentient and independent entity, which acts on its own, outside of the so-called working of GOD, and that all Evil - regardless of the form it takes - is actually the outcome of Man's mis-directed exercise of his Creative Power of Thought, and it is only when the totality of the human race properly renovates their exercise of their creative faculties, that Evil will - literally - be no more.

At this point, it may be asked: if such an inter-relation and inter-connection can be show to exist between the teachings of metaphysics or New Thought and the contents of the Bible, is it that a similar relation and connection may be found in the sacred writings of other religions also? To date, this Author is only aware of one person who, reportedly, has ever made such an investigation, and the only explanation he can offer for that is along the lines of what has been previously stated; namely that, arising out of the reverence that has generally been inculcated into Man - whether individually or collectively - for religious scriptures, in times past, most if not all attempts to work out an alternative interpretation of scripture as compared to that imparted by the leadership of any religious body, was either dismissed or denounced as heresy, or in some cases, blasphemy, and in the latter case, severe punishment was meted out to those considered guilty of such actions. However, and as stated before, such behaviour has become the exception, rather than the rule, so that, all that may be required for any such investigation to take place, is someone making the decision to do so.

In addition, another question may also be raised: if such revelations are indeed to be found in the contents of the Bible, are they being imparted to those who call themselves Christians, and, if not, why not? Based solely on his own observation, this Author holds the viewpoint that, with very few exceptions outside what might be called the New Thought Movement, he has seen no evidence or indication that this is the case with so-called "conventional" Christianity. And as to any answer to the point: "if not, why not?", all that this Author can offer is that the leadership of those denominations of conventional Christianity are unaware of those revelations. To borrow the words of an authority on the subject - and which can be traced back to similar statements credited to Jesus in the New Testament - the leadership has formed "... a conception in accordance with the tradition they have received from others, and until they have learned to think for themselves, they have to abide by the results of that tradition." And, in accordance with much that has been stated in previous discussions, the results of abiding by the traditional or conventional conception is, simply, the repetition of the results they have been previously obtaining.

If the maintenance and perpetuation of some particular result or results is what a person wants, then it is not the business or purpose of anyone else (Author included) to change their position on the matter. What follows at this point is primarily intended for anyone who is honestly dis-satisfied with the results they have been realizing in their lives and who genuinely seek to change said results. To put it simply, since Thought has been proven to be the starting-point of all things, then it logically and sensibly follows that Thoughts and Ideas (or more precisely, Beliefs) must be changed, before any Results will change in a corresponding degree. And, while it may not necessarily be the only means of effecting such a change, an apprehension of the content and meaning of the Bible, from the standpoint of metaphysics and New Thought, is certainly one way to bring this about. Speaking form the Author's own perspective, it does not necessarily require that a person who does not profess to be a Jew or a Christian must abandon their  current religious affiliation and (so-to-say) "be converted". It only requires a sincere desire to gain understanding - and a deeper and wider understanding at that.

Without question, the most comprehensive reference source encountered by this Author to date, which offers such an interpretation of the Bible, as described by the contents of this page, is to be found in a certain book, which has been referred to in one or more preceding pages. As a starting point, a web link is provided below by which the visitor who wishes to undertake further investigation may commence reading of the full text online (clicking the link will open a new browser window). Based upon this Author's own experience, it is neither expected nor suggested that the visitor must go through the entire book in one session - it will likely require many re-visits and repeated exposures to its contents, but the Author volunteers that anyone and everyone who undertakes to discover the meaning of the message of this book and its contents, will realize the truth of the message for themselves, rather than merely accept it on someone else's account.

    Maximize Your Potential Through The

    Power Of Your Subconscious Mind

    To Overcome Fear And Worry

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------

    By Joseph Murphy, DD, Ph.D.

    Summary of chapters

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------

    Chapter 1 – Overcoming Worry

When worry thoughts come to your mind, remind yourself that Infinite Intelligence is bringing your desire, ideal, plan or purpose to pass in Divine order. That's supplanting the negative thought.

When your thoughts are God's thoughts, God's power is with your thoughts of good. You must cleanse your mind like you cleanse out your own home. The mind is your house. You have to keep constantly cleaning it, filling it with truths of God, which crowd out of the mind everything unlike God.

If you repeat a thought pattern or act over and over again, after a while it becomes second nature, which is the response of your subconscious mind to your conscious thinking and acting. And that's prayer, too.

The house of God is your own mind. Your mind is where you walk and talk with God, for God is that Supreme Intelligence, that Boundless Wisdom within you. It's locked in your own subconscious depths.

All conditions, circumstances and events are subject to alteration. Every created thing will some day pass away. The age-old maxim: This, too, shall pass away, is always true. But your mind and Spirit, the personality of you, will never pass away

    Chapter 2 – Banish Guilt

We must learn to use the Life Principle the right way and cease going against the stream of life. When a child is born, it is universal life individualizing itself and appearing in your home. The child has no discrimination or discernment. It has not begun to use its reason as yet. Therefore, it is subject to the mood and attitude of the parents.

You must take charge of your own mind; not permit others to govern it for you. Creed, dogma, traditions, superstition, fear, and ignorance rule the mind of the average person. The greatest desert in the world is in the mind of the average person. Average people do not own their own minds at all. Their minds do not belong to them. It is often ruled over by strong-minded family members or governed by domination of others.

Children are particularly susceptible to feelings of guilt when they disobey parents or teachers. They are warned that disobedience will lead to punishment—not only by the parents for the specific disobedient act, but God will punish them for being naughty. This can be disastrous to some children. It breeds with in them a guilt complex that can destroy their lives. Do not invoke the fear of eternal damnation on the child. It is better to tell the child that God’s love never ceases and will be there to help him or her live a good life.

If you let other people take control of your mind, you lose the freedom God has given you to make decisions based on your own thoughts. You must follow your own heart – that is your own subconscious mind. You must feed your conscious mind with positive thoughts by prayer and meditation and it will push out from your subconscious the seeds of guilt sown by others.

Self-condemnation is the most destructive of all mental poisons. It robs you of vitality, enthusiasm, and energy. It may affect all the organs of your body. If you let Divine love, peace, and harmony flood your mind, and if you are sincere in transforming yourself, the past is forgotten and remembered no more.

Chapter 3 – The Supreme Mastery of Fear

Fear is like a poison gas pumped into one's atmosphere, It causes mental, moral, and spiritual asphyxiation, and sometimes death - - death to energy, death to tissue, and death to all growth.

Fear and worry make us attract the very things we dread. The fear habit impairs health, shortens life and paralyzes efficiency. Doubt and fear mean failure; faith is an optimist, fear a pessimist.

Do not let yourself be subservient to another's thoughts. Have a healthy, reverent respect for your thought, because your thought is your prayer. What you feel, you attract; what you imagine, you become.

Your thought governs you, not another. So, stand tall. Stand up straight, and say: "I am one with the Infinite, which lies stretched in smiling repose.”

Fearful people are always very selfish. They are wrapped up in themselves. Love is always outgoing. It is an emanation. Fear is turning within in morbid introspection, believing someone is going to hurt you, that evil spirits can possess you. All this is ignorance. Ignorance is the only sin, and all the punishment is the consequence of that ignorance. Ignorance is the only devil in the world.

Realize that fear is a thought in your own mind created by yourself. It has no reality; it's a shadow in your mind. The thing you are afraid of does not exist. Fear is faith in the wrong thing. Fear is faith upside down. Fear is God upside down. It's a twisted, morbid concept of life.

God is the Life Principle. The Trinity is your Spirit, mind and body; or Spirit, mind and function because you need a body to express. And the mind is the priest, or the intermediary, between the Invisible and the visible; namely, your own thought. Therefore, the Spirit responds to the nature of your thoughts.

All humans have to err, because that's the only way we are going to grow, and expand, It is impossible for anybody to banish fear if you have been indoctrinated in a fear of the future and afterlife—if you have been taught that God is a God of fear. But God is a God of love.

In order to banish abnormal fear, you have to come back to the fundamental truth that there is but One Power. The Lord, thy God, is One Lord, One Power. Not two or three, or a thousand. Just one. It moves as unity. It is all love, all peace, and all harmony. Align yourself with that and all fear will go away.

Chapter 4 – The Healing Power of Love

There is only one love. It is pure, perfect, undefiled, approving, abundant and generous. It never changes nor wavers nor weakens. It is God. We love because God first loved us. God is the source of love.

God’s love responds to everyone as a liberating, lightening of the heart. It is a higher awareness of consciousness, which heals and makes us whole again.

Love in divine sense is an act of compassion and mercy and our every attempt to practice divine love is effective at some time, in a certain way. Granted, we are not perfect, but we can and are able and should become committed to practicing and living according to the golden rule and the law of love.

To love God is to give your allegiance, devotion and loyalty to the One Power, refusing to recognize any other power in the world. When you definitely recognize and completely accept in your mind that God really is Omnipotent in the most practical, literal and most matter of fact manner, you are loving God, because you are loyal to the One Power.

Faith is an attitude of mind. It's a way of thinking. You have faith if you have a mental image of accomplishing something wonderful, and if you sustain it with expectancy and confidence, your subconscious mind will bring that to pass.

If you want to conquer fear, you have to come back to the truth that there is only One Power, Indivisible, and a Source of love. When you know that, when you align with it, you can't be fearful, you can't worry. This Power has no opposition. There is nothing to oppose it, challenge it, vitiate it or thwart it. It is the Life Principle. It has overcome every opposition in the world. It's Omnipotent, All Powerful, goes on conquering and to conquer.

The love, the light and the glory of God surrounds you, enfolds you and enwraps you. The Divine Presence governs you now. You love to work with others. You love to represent and express God's ideas. So, affirm boldly: "God's ideas unfold within me bringing me harmony, health, peace and joy.

Chapter 5 – The Inner Meaning of The 23rd Psalm

Meditation determines your destiny. We are always meditating. Your thoughts and feelings control your destiny. Meditation is as real and as natural as digestion, assimilation, and breathing.

God is the Living Spirit within you, the Supreme Intelligence, the Life Principle. We will not want for any good thing if we choose the Supreme Intelligence as our guide and counselor.

Meditate on whatsoever things are true, lovely, noble, and God-like. To meditate is to eat all these truths, to cogitate, to give your attention to something, to focus on something.

The shepherd in the Bible is a symbol of the guiding, healing, protective power of the Divine Presence within you. You are a good shepherd when you know and believe that God, or the Supreme Intelligence, is the only Presence and Power, Cause, and Substance within you.

Close your eyes. Become still and quiet. And gently affirm that the wisdom of God anoints your intellect and is always a lamp unto your feet; it's always a light upon your path. . Look to the Infinite Presence at all times, and think, speak, act, and react from the standpoint of the Divine Center within you. Realize, know, feel, and claim that Infinite Sprit is your guide, your counselor, your boss, your senior partner; and that Divine right action governs you at all times.

If you're afraid of death, of after life, of judgment day, and things of that nature, then you are being governed by ignorance and delusion and by false beliefs of all kinds. For God has not given us the spirit of fear, but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind. Death in Biblical language is ignorance of the truth. That's the only death there is.

The tabernacle of God is with humankind. He will dwell with them; they shall be his people. And God, Himself, shall be with them and be their God. You are now rooted in the Divine. You are at home with God. He gives you rest and security. You are relaxed, at peace, completely free from fear. For where you are, God is; and you dwell with God forever.

    Chapter 6 – The Protective 91st Psalm

When you are fearful or worried, re-read the Psalm aloud, Speak it slowly and quietly, and you will dissipate, neutralize, and obliterate the fear.

Realize God's love surrounds you, which the impregnable fortress is within you as you dwell in the secret place, as you contemplate the Presence of God where you are. Then you are rendered impervious to all harm.

Affirm frequently: "I am inspired from On High. God loves me, for it is written: He careth for me." As you constantly claim that God is the Only Presence, Power, Cause, and Substance, guiding, directing, governing, and sustaining you, then after a while it will become your Lord, your master, your dominant conviction.

As you fill your mind with the eternal truths of God, you will crowd out of your mind everything unlike the One Who Forever Is. Right means the objective world. Your spiritual thoughts destroy the negative thoughts. One spiritual thought destroys ten thousand negative thoughts, and you will also neutralize all the negative patterns in your subconscious mind.

Love casts out hate, peace casts out pain, and joy casts out sadness. So, Divine love, Divine peace, and the miraculous Healing Power go straight to the roots of the trouble; then you are redeemed.

The wisdom of God anoints your intellect. It is a lamp unto your feet; it's a light upon your path. Your cup (your heart) is truly a chamber of God's Presence. It runneth over with love and joy. You mentally dwell on goodness, truth, and beauty. You are dwelling in the house of God at all times.

Chapter 7 – Why Did This Happen To Me?

When your thoughts are completely free from fear and worry, you are thinking from the standpoint of the Divine center within you; and God speaks, thinks and acts through you. Therefore, you speak in words of wisdom, truth and beauty; words of harmony, health and peace. So, you think, therefore, from the God center within.

If you do not think constructively, harmoniously and peacefully, the mass mind will do your thinking for you. And that mass mind believes in tragedy, misfortune, sickness, disease, accidents; hate, murder, and all sorts of things. If you don't do your own thinking, these negative vibrations, or thoughts of the mass mind, move in upon you, reach a point of saturation, precipitate as accident, misfortune, sickness, disease.

The law of life is the law of belief. If you fear sickness, you attract it. If you think good health, you will be healthy. So, the law of the Lord is perfect. You can't think one thing and produce another. Trouble of any kind is nature's alarm system that we are thinking wrongly in that direction. Nothing but a change of thought can set us free.

There is no worse suffering than a guilty conscience, and, certainly, none more destructive. Stop condemning yourself and begin to accept that the Infinite healing presence saturates your whole being, that God dwells in every cell of your body.

It is done unto you as you believe, and a belief is a thought in the mind. No external power or evil entity is trying to lure or harm you. No person has any power. The Power of God is in you. One with God is a majority. If God be for you, who can be against you?

Guilt, worry and fear are the psychosomatic equivalent of germs and viruses. By replacing thoughts of guilt, worry and fear with thoughts of faith, confidence and belief, healing is accelerated.

Chapter 8 – Prayer Is the Key

Your every thought and feeling is your prayer. Every thought tends to manifest itself unless it is neutralized by a thought of greater intensity. In the specific sense, prayer is conscious contact with the Infinite Intelligence within you. Effective prayer must be based upon the spiritual premise that there is a Supreme Intelligence within us that becomes the thing we desire.

There is an Infinite Intelligence operating in your subconscious mind that responds to your conscious mind's thinking and imagining. When you turn over your request to your subconscious mind, you should do so with the absolute conviction that it has the know-how of accomplishment that it will respond to you according to the nature of your request.

If you are having discord with another person, rearrange all your thoughts, imagery and responses on the side of peace and harmony. If you see hatred in the other, practice knowing that Divine love dissolves everything unlike Itself in the mind and heart of that person and also in your own mind and heart.

All that is required and asked of you is that you change in perception and conviction that every one has God-given privilege to be as he or she is. Let them go to find their highest good in God. The weight of the world will fall from your shoulders! You are not responsible for the world. Heal yourself; disabuse yourself that you are responsible for ills and evils of world.

Know that the Infinite Presence and Power loves you and cares for you. As you pray this way, fear will gradually fade away. Turn your mind to God and His love. Feel and know that there is only One Healing Power and Its corollary. There is no power to challenge the action of the Infinite.

    Chapter 9 – Sleep Soundly

Quite often answers to the problems that have been on your mind all day are given to you while you are asleep.

Remember, you are spiritually recharged during sleep, and adequate sleep is essential to produce joy and vitality in life.

Assume the feeling of being what you long to be. Assume that you now have what you long to possess. Assume you are now experiencing that which you long to be. And live in that role. Live in that mood. You go off into the deep of sleep, and you are impregnating your subconscious mind.

Often you are instructed in your sleep, the way out, the solution to your problem. You are the master of your thoughts, emotions and responses to life. When you pray, delegate and turn over your request to your subconscious mind with faith and confidence. The deeper mind knows how to solve your problem and presents you with the answer. You will receive an answer, for it is written: "In quietness and in confidence shall be your strength."

Chapter 10 – Living In the Presence

The four essential truths are these:

First, we must accept God as a Presence who is omnipresent and universal.

Second, omnipresence, God, being everywhere, is within us. We are in it. God is love; our relationship is as a beloved one.

Third, the Presence is Omniscient: God knows all and sees all and being love, forgives Dare and have the heart or courage to believe and claim a loving, all-knowing God, which wants and desires you to know and receive far more than you know and desire to receive God.

Fourth, the psalmist informs of a way to apply, use, these truths to heal, restore, and correct mind-body, conditions and relationships.

God is omnipresent. It is the very life of you. This Presence is always waiting for you to call up It. Regardless of the degree of bondage you may be in, this Presence and Power will respond as mercy, soothing, healing and restoring your soul.

The purpose and function of prayer, meditation, contemplation, is to cleanse the mind and to make the contents of the mind and heart obey our conscious direction. Literally, changing the habitual thought patterns and processes; make disciples of our mind and hearts.

You are innately, intrinsically, good. You are God's children,. Accept and acknowledge your royal and Divine inheritance! Dare to believe you are a child of the King of Kings. Walk the King's highway. All is yours!

Chapter 11 – Three Keys to Peace of Mind

Are we not all seekers? Money is good, but not without friendship.

Friendship is good, but not outside a higher devotion, devotion to art and music is good, but not without a clear conscience; a clear conscience is good, but impossible without forgiveness. These are all good and very good and we should be thankful for them, and we should express our thanks to the healing presence within.

The kingdom of heaven is within, so we must learn to be good merchants within -- our thoughts and feelings. To select with all the deliberate care and interest and involvement of one making an investment in the market. Select only those ideas that promote our well-being and prosperity and reject, refuse to accept, those which do not.

Love is the power that binds together in one magnificent harmony the universe. It is the harmonizing principle that sets us on the high road of the ancients to health, happiness, well-being, prosperity and peace of mind.

Remember and apply Dr. Albert Schweizer’s philosophy, which he termed, "A reverence for life." He gave us a legacy of three great ideas, "keys" which unlock the gates of our minds and hearts:

    1. The very mystery that life – the God-mind -- exists in us, the world, the universe.

    2. Our purpose is realized in serving life, not merely to be served.

    3. A reverence for life.
