HOW THE 10 CYCLES ARE MATCHED TO HUMAN DEVELOPMENTS
THE TEST
The 5 Outer planets as they circle the Sun make 4 main aspects to each other – they conjunct (0 degrees), they form an Out square (90 degrees), they form an Opposition (180 degrees) and an In square (270 degrees). (see Diagram on previous page). For any human development to match one of these cycles it must strictly occur within 10 degrees before or after these 4 main cycle stages but also after emerging at 0 degrees it must encounter a challenge at 90 degrees, reach maximum fruition at 180 degrees and meet a terminal challenge at 270 degrees. This makes a robust double test for the hypothesis to meet. Additionally any human development should fit the assigned consistent meaning of the cycle.
So how do we go about finding correlations between planetary cycles and human development ? There are 5 steps – the Ephemeris, Planetary Concepts, Planetary Cycle collective meanings, Planetary Cycle orbs and Timelines (online historical data) sources.
STEP ONE – The Ephemeris
First we obtain a NASA derived Ephemeris (tables of co-ordinates) that gives the precise dates when the 5 outer planets make the 4 cycle aspects to each other. In the book these dates are listed in an appendix for the years 1816 to 2064 – but only the years 2000 to 2030 are detailed on this website.
Second we use astronomical software to determine when any of the 10 outer planetary cycles are within 10 degrees before or 10 degrees after the 4 main cycle stages – the beginning, quarter way, half way and three quarter way points. This site has developed a Search Engine (see HOME PAGE lower left) that allows you, the user, to read out for any period up to 12 years which of these 10 cycles are in that 20 degree orb and for how long. The period covered is 1942 to 2032.
Full details of the source for the Ephemeris and an astronomical explanation of the solar system and planetary movements within it are to be found on THE ASTRONOMY button on the HOME PAGE
STEP TWO – Planetary Concepts
So far everything we have done is astronomy – though the astronomical community has recently downgraded the status of Pluto to a dwarf planet, which this site ignores. Scientists nevertheless can agree the dates when any of these planets make aspects to any other planet. Now we have to go to astrology to look at the conceptual meaning of the outer planets – and here astronomers and astrologers part company. How can a huge or distant physical entity have any valid meaning attached to it ? In actual fact the astronomers behind the unmanned but highly sophisticated spacecraft and probes that have been sent to Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus , Neptune and Pluto might surprisingly answer that each of the planets and some of their moons bring up strong associations and these even have a conceptual feel for them. Though astrophysicists at NASA may have a poor view of astrology they may be surprised to find just how closely one of the cycles in the book perfectly matches all stages of the history of space exploration.
That ancient man had a sophisticated grasp of the movement of planets and stars in the heavens is frequently underestimated – though Stonehenge and the Pyramids still have the power to awe modern man. Because societies in ancient times (and medieval times) had a wholly theological or mythological approach to the implications of scientific discovery it is understood that the planets and the stars were seen as Gods or as manifestations of the Gods. This is perhaps the primary basis for planets (of which only Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn were known till 1781) having conceptual associations. The second, and for astrologers the much more important reason, is that in those religion-governed civilisations with their totally black unpolluted clear skies the movement of the planets in relation to what was happening in those slow moving societies was charted in immense detail. Over millennia perceived correlations built up between the movement of the planets and different kind of human events. Only in the 18th century did these associations get completely overtaken by modern science and their use get confined to astrologers.
The meanings assigned by ancient astrologers to Jupiter and Saturn were in the main surprisingly generic – Jupiter corresponded with expansion, Saturn with restriction. Modern man has dispensed with the mythological strata in abstract language but still uses much the same conceptual structure. And there is no reason to believe that the advent of modern science has changed or downgraded the generic conceptual significance of expansion and restriction – in many if not all fields. The book takes these two meanings for Jupiter and Saturn though it adds ‘expectation’ for Jupiter and ‘implementation’ for Saturn. Check out the CONCEPT MAPS button on this site to see the full range of concepts that can be yielded from the main generic concept chosen. But how does this justify planetary cycles having conceptual associations? It is time to talk of Language.
LANGUAGE AND REALITY
We use words to divide up and define reality. The way we do this changes over time and until recently across geography. Modern man divides up reality using quite different broad terms (categories) than 16th century man or Ancient man, Western man quite different terms from traditional Indian or Chinese cultures. The kind of conceptual mapping Astrology uses recognises that an accurate and open-ended interpretation of reality cannot be founded on language. In other words it is saying that when we argue or theorise about reality we have to use words but we tend to use those words as though they accurately represent what we are trying to describe. But the actual map that interlinks reality may differ from the way we use words to divide up that reality.
A Thesaurus divides words up and relates them vertically and horizontally to broader or parallel terms. A similar approach is here adopted to dividing up collective reality – the key planetary concepts (transformation, idealisation, intellectual & technological change, implementation, expectation) divide up the processes we can at any time distinguish happening in society while the cycles horizontally relate these to actual events and developments. The concepts chosen are as generic as possible. To get any broader concepts we would have to reach dualisms such as light and dark, earth and sky, yin and yang, mind and matter and subject and object.
