Cycles Astrology 2...What Counts as a Cycle?

Start Here 2

WHAT COUNTS AS A CYCLE ?

A true cycle is one in which whatever is born at the conjunction is challenged but extended at the quarter stage, maximised at the half way stage and terminally challenged at the three quarter stage. To avoid repetition or confusion the terms – Conjunction, Out square, Opposition and In square are used to represent the 0 degree stage, the 90 degree stage, the 180 degree stage and the 270 degree stage in the 360 degree cycle. In Planetary cycles these are the aspects the faster planet makes to the slower planet as they move through the cycle. The Schematic diagram below illustrates the aspect stages in a cycle. Of course in actuality both planets are also continually moving counterclockwise – Go to ‘The Astronomy’ button for a more detailed diagram and explanation.

An important way of looking at a planetary cycle is to see it like a seasonal cycle. At the conjunction something new is seeded, By the Out square that seed has sprouted but now has to face climactic challenges, at the opposition the plant has reached maturity and can be harvested, at the In square the conditions become inappropriate for the plant’s continued existence. This seeding, growth, fruition and decline sequence applies to many human endeavours from agriculture to consumer goods – as of course it does to our own lives – if we take the average life expectancy in advanced countries as near 80 – we are born as a baby, we come to adulthood around 20, we reach maximum work productivity around 40 and prepare for retirement at 60

LONGTERM, MEDIUM TERM AND SHORT TERM CYCLES

The more we accept our life and the world around us is cyclical, the more reasonable it becomes to attempt to compare society’s development with developments in the space and time universe we live in. The planets circling the Sun because of their differing speeds form cycles – in the case of the outer planets taking amounts of time that in many cases compare to the way society divides up long periods. The Neptune/Pluto cycle is the longest cycle – taking 493 years to complete it will be mostly of interest to longterm historians. The Uranus/Neptune cycle is 172 years long and appears to correspond to cycles linking humanity’s ideals with major technologies. The Uranus/Pluto cycle is between 113 and 141 years long and seems to match major transformations in intellectual and technological knowledge .

The medium length cycles correspond to periods forming the historical background canvas for two or even three generations. The majority of adults in society will have had experience or understanding of the major effect of the changes such cycles bring. The Saturn/Uranus cycle of 45 years matches periods where new ideas sweep away established structures – the collapse of the Soviet Union is one example. The Saturn/Neptune cycle of 36 years  matches periods when powerful ideologies impact society –  the movement for racial de-segregation in both the USA and South Africa is one example, Communism another. The Saturn/Pluto cycle of 31 to 38 years (median taken as 35 years) aligns with periods when exceptionally threatening longterm issues confront society – Fundamentalist Terrorism is the current example. Where else in the physical universe can we look for cycles of the sort of duration that match the duration of these major threshold developments that are the background to our lives

Cycle SequenceFinally the short term Jupiter cycles of between 12 and 20 years. The Jupiter/Saturn cycle of 20 years shows an amazing correlation with economic growth and recession as well as major war and conflict thresholds. The final three cycles have a similar length to longterm business plans, to industry analyses and as it happens to the age span of a generation. The Jupiter/Uranus 14 year cycle matches short term technology development – recently especially Space exploration and genetics and medical breakthroughs. The Jupiter/Neptune 13 years cycle seems to track peace negotiations and popular uprisings – as well as generational culture. The Jupiter/Pluto 12 year cycle matches short term upheavals often of a violent nature  – even in recent times closely matching assassinations, kidnappings and hijackings.
