IDEALISATION OF TECHNOLOGICAL CHANGE (Uranus/Neptune) 1993 - 2165
The present 172 year Uranus/Neptune cycle started very recently in 1993 and will not reach its outgoing square (+90 degrees) till 2039 and its opposition (180 degrees) till March 2078. Even the Sextile (+60 degrees) will not be reached till 2025.
What might the cycle mean?
We have given the generic meaning of this cycle as the ‘Idealisation of intellectual and technological change’. Its primary focus is humanity idealising new technology – possible candidates for this focus throughout history include major society changing inventions like the wheel, steam power, electricity, telecommunications – which in differing ways came to be especially idealised because of the benefits they enabled.
Idealisation may be defined as ‘being regarded as most suitable or perfect’ When a new technology, a new philosophical theory, a new theory about the Universe’s origins, a new scientific discovery like DNA, a new form of vehicle propulsion, a new method of communicating data electronically gets created it will always go through a cycle of growing acceptance, universal acceptance and then eventually declining relevance. But every so often a development in knowledge (Uranus) occurs which appears not only to be a major advance in human capability, but an advance that constellates with the type of idealism (Neptune) becoming prevalent in society at that time. With this cycle we are looking NOT at the rise and fall of theories or technologies but their relationship to society’s ideals and imagination.

TRANSFORMATION OF INTELLECTUAL MINDSET (Uranus/Pluto) 1965 - 2104
The Current cycle (139 years)
The present 139 year Uranus/Pluto cycle started relatively recently in 1965 and reached its Quarter stage (+90 degrees) in 2012. The Sextile (+ 60 degrees) point was reached in 1995. The Half way point is not till 2046, the Three Quarter stage 2073 and the new cycle in 2104 – all beyond the reach of this site and the book it is based on.
What might this cycle mean?
We have given the generic meaning of this cycle as the ‘Transformation of intellectual & technological innovation or mindset’. Both Intellectual and Technological innovation are seen as equal indeed intertwined though (in a Marxian sense) the former seems to develop after the latter. Of course Intellectual innovation and changes in society’s mindset continue throughout history but every so often there is a breakthrough or a revolution, a major invention or innovation that serves to guide all subsequent innovation for a lengthy period.
HOW THE APPROACH AND METHODS OF INTELLECTUAL, SCIENTIFIC AND TECHNOLOGICAL INNOVATION ALTER
Whereas we have described the Uranus/Neptune cycle as signifying the ‘idealisation of intellectual change’ – the alignment and identification of a major shift in intellectual and scientific thought with a new set of collective ideals, the Uranus/Pluto cycle signifies first how the approach and methods of intellectual, scientific, technological even aesthetic innovation alter in themselves’ It also signifies how that translates from the intellectual into a societal ‘mindset’ – a new related societal attitude that determines how people break through and alter social situations and attitudes.
Here we shall be looking at the conjunction for the emergence of a major new technology linked to the adoption of a major new methodology in pursuing or extending knowledge. The Intellectual and Technological changes seem to be not just synchronistic with the four stages of the cycle but sequentially cyclical in that whatever is born at the conjunction, gets extended and challenged at the Quarter stage, maximised at the Half way point and reaches a terminal point at the Three quarter stage.
In the ‘Cycles of History’ book, but not this website, there is a third development that matches this cycle. It has to do with human rights – in the West fought for and increasingly won by women, blacks and gays from 1965 but now encountering a challenge to their extension. It has also to do with individual freedoms – especially the freedom of expression – now challenged by majorities, traditional religions and cultures and even by governments.

STRUCTURAL UPHEAVAL (Saturn/Uranus) 1988 – 2032

The present Saturn/Uranus cycle started recently in February 1988, reaching its outgoing square (+90 degrees) in 1999. The Opposition occurs from 2008 to 2011 and the incoming square (+270 degrees) will be reached in February 2021. (The next cycle will commence in June 2032,) What relationship between intellectual change and the status Quo does this cycle signify ?

HOW A NEW MINDSET SWEEPS AWAY ESTABLISHED INSTITUTIONAL STRUCTURES
We have given the generic meaning of this cycle as the ‘Relationship between intellectual change and the Status Quo’. The term ‘Status Quo’ is a short way of saying ‘the established order of things’. ‘Intellectual’ should be taken to refer to reasoning and understanding – to ideas and not to something academic. Whereas the Uranus/Pluto cycle signifies how the structure and methods of intellectual, scientific, technological and aesthetic thought alter in themselves and the Uranus/Neptune cycle signifies how innovative ideas get taken up as ideals by society, the Saturn/Uranus cycle deals with how a new intellectual mindset actually alters or sweeps away established political, economic and institutional and other structures. It is all about ‘ideas in action’ or ’revolutionary ideas’ . We are talking of the emergence of a major new set of societal attitudes or new ideas leading to the break-up of political or socioeconomic structures.
Here we shall be looking at the conjunction for clear indications that new ideas are being born which show signs of changing or sweeping away established political, economic and other institutional structures. Throughout history this conjunction coincides with the overthrow of the establishment, typically governments or ruling parties but as we shall see sometimes even empires.

IDEOLOGY STRUGGLES (Saturn/Neptune) 1989 – 2026
(36 year cycle)
The present Saturn/Neptune cycle started in March 1989 and reached its Quarter stage (+90 degrees) in June 1998. The Halfway stage occurred in August 2006 and the Three quarter stage ( +270 degrees) in November 2015. The next cycle will commence in 2026.
What might the cycle mean ?
We have given the generic meaning of this cycle as ‘The Implementation or restriction of collective ideals’ – in other words ‘converting ideals into practice’ or ‘preventing ideals from becoming reality’. Whereas the Neptune/Pluto cycle signifies how collective idealism in the form of religion, philosophy and long term societal goals becomes completely transformed and whereas the Uranus/Neptune cycle signifies how innovative intellectual, technological or aesthetic ideas get taken up as ideals, the Saturn/Neptune cycle deals with how ideals which have been created, written about, voiced, discussed or debated start getting actually adopted or put into practice – or are prevented from that happening.
In the Saturn/Uranus cycle we looked at how a new mindset sweeps away the Status Quo, in this cycle we look at how ideals become the Status Quo. Here we shall be looking at the conjunction for clear indications that new societal ideals make their first start to becoming accepted as the norm. Throughout history this conjunction would not so much coincide therefore with the beginning of restructuring, overthrow and later dissolution of the established order but with the early manifestation, the struggle to get adopted and the widespread acceptance of new ideals or ideologies.
PRECISE SYNCHRONICITY WITH RISE AND FALL OF COMMUNISM
In this chapter we shall demonstrate the precise synchronicity between the Saturn/Neptune cycle and the birth, growth difficulties, peak of influence, terminal crisis and death of Communism as a global ideology. At the 1846 Saturn/Neptune conjunction the Communist Manifesto was published. At the 1989 Saturn/Neptune conjunction the Berlin Wall fell and the USSR crumbled. Sceptics may be justified in seeing this as a coincidence. But as we shall see when the 1882 and 1917 conjunctions, which came in between those start and end dates, fit the pattern, the cycle begins to gain considerable credibility. What might the cycle mean ?
We have given the generic meaning of this cycle as the ‘The transformation of social, political and economic structures’. An alternative would be ‘the relationship between transformation and the Status-Quo’ but these terms are inherently opposites – what is established is always going at some point to be transformed. This cycle focuses in on ‘structures’ and the most important structures which determine human activity and survival are social, political and economic.
In the Saturn/Uranus cycle we looked at how a new intellectual mindset sweeps away the Status Quo, in the Saturn/Neptune cycle we looked at how new collective ideals get put into practice, over time becoming the Status Quo. But here we look at how the key structures that determine the Status Quo – social, political and economic institutions and organisations, national and international power centres, leaders and figureheads, constitutions, formations and frameworks – get transformed even destroyed. This is a cycle of organisational death and re-birth.
