Jupiter Saturn Conjunction 2020-2021
A New Era Begins
The conjunction of Saturn and Jupiter is at its peak during the period 12-31 December but signals the beginning of a new evolutionary era, a major shift of the times and the beginning of a new age of enlightenment as both planets move into Aquarius, and this has an ongoing effect for the next 20 years. This new beginning coincides with the end of an era brought in with the Saturn Pluto Conjunction, the momentous times of the Saturn Uranus Squares, the profound turmoil of Pluto in Capricorn with the rebirthing of societal structures and systems, and the crises and destabilisation of Uranus in Taurus with a ground-shattering revolution in our everyday lives and practices.
This conjunction brings together opposing, or at least very different, energies for both to be recognised and reconciled – the optimism, opportunity and expansion of Jupiter and the caution, responsibilities and restrictions of Saturn. There is a desire for greater freedom and the urge to do something not done before, to have a new project or to go somewhere new, to widen experience and increase learning and wisdom (Jupiter). But this is combined with the caution of doing something different, the fear that moving on would upset the status quo or the authorities and would bring suffering and punishment, the need to operate within current limitations and the desire to do things properly and respect the rules (Saturn).
As both Saturn and Jupiter are moving from Capricorn into Aquarius during this period, conjunctions occur in both signs at 28-30o Capricorn and then at 0-2.5o Aquarius. So if you have any natal planets at 28-30o in Capricorn or at 0-2.5o in Aquarius, (or in opposition or square ie 28-30o in Cancer, Libra or Aries or 0-2.5o in Leo, Scorpio or Taurus) then this could be a very significant time for you to get to grips with expanding your life and tackling what you need to do for you to move on (in whichever areas associated with your natal planet aspected).
Jupiter urges us to free ourselves from what has been holding us back, to expand our horizons, to explore as well as to gain greater understanding, to go further and beyond what is familiar, to experience something new and to find greater fulfilment. Whereas Saturn urges us to recognise our obligations, to be realistic and responsible, to be organised and cautious, to respect authority and the rules, to nobly suffer limited resources and deprivation and work hard. See Saturn in Capricorn and Saturn in Aquarius. So this is a time of dualities; restlessness combined with the fear of making a move, caution with optimism, widening horizons but within limits. So we may feel very conflicted; with both a desire to expand, break free and move forward to something new and at the same time feeling limited by responsibilities and obligations, by the authorities and rules or by our own feelings of being incapable, inadequate or not having the necessary resources.
This duality can be seen with the covid pandemic: some people willingly follow the rules and lockdowns (Saturn) while others value their freedom and protest against them (Jupiter). Advances in science could mean the introduction of a covid vaccine, which makes us hopeful and optimistic because it could free us from the lockdowns and restrictions. However, Saturn makes us distrustful of science and anything new and untested, so limits the optimism, with questions such as “has vaccine been tested enough? Is it reliable? Does it do what is supposed to?”
This can therefore be a time, on the one hand, when there is a great sense of restlessness and a surge of protests against any restrictions, when we feel totally fed up of being told what we must do, and so act to free ourselves from those burdens or rules that are stifling us. It can be a time when restrictions, duties and obligations become too onerous and no longer tolerable, so that we become reckless and irresponsible in our urge to break free and then perhaps suffer the consequences, are punished in some way, deemed irresponsible so lose respect or position, lose security or get into trouble with those who have power over us. On the other hand, there can be a lot of fear, a further laying down of the law, new rules and prohibitions, an increase in authoritarianism to limit movement and freedom, causing more fear and restriction. We may believe that greater restrictions are necessary and could be so fearful of suffering any punishment for going against the status quo, breaking the rules or opposing the authorities, that we dare not make the necessary changes to move on. In which case we could stagnate, become ill, exhausted and depressed.
Both the urge for freedoms and the suppression of freedoms become more prevalent, so we could see greater restrictions enforced, as the elites’ last desperate attempts to rule as in the past (see Pluto in Capricorn), using the Covid virus as an excuse to clamp down on the people, keeping them fearful and in check, in order to retain their power. But also more disruptions, rebellions and protests as the power of the people gets stronger and the power of the current establishment weakens with the growing distrust and rebellious mood.
So this is a time not to delude ourselves that everything will be fine and dandy regardless, but to be aware of the consequences of our actions, to be more ‘grown up’ and to determine how we can move on in a responsible way without causing suffering. Or it may be necessary to look at how we overly restrict ourselves with our beliefs and practices, to get rid of unnecessary burdens and suffering and to tackle any fears about moving on, any inhibitions, sense of inadequacy, lack of confidence or fear to go somewhere unfamiliar.
It is a time to focus on what is truly important and to use the opportunities available to make some fundamental changes, however difficult or fear-inducing, to the structure of our lives, to create a solid foundation from which we have the freedom to grow and become fulfilled, to move forward to achieve our goals. It is a time to consider our true responsibilities and to act upon them, but also to free ourselves from any unnecessary responsibilities, such as obligations that are weighing far too heavily, duties that we have taken on but have no need to suffer any longer, hard work and burdens that no longer serve a purpose. This may mean moving on from people or situations that are doing us no good, changing standards no longer appropriate, realigning our idea of duty and responsibility more in accordance with reality; in short releasing ourselves from unnecessary limitations that are holding us back. It is a time to build new structures or to expand existing structures to improve the way things are organised and run, for a better, freer future. It is time to recognise that laws, rules and regulations which govern and order life may be needed but that they should be ethical as well as practical, and should serve a good purpose, whether to family, community or society in general. This can be a great time to move on by establishing better organisation in life.
As both planets move forward into Aquarius (Saturn for its second time) and out of Capricorn, there is a shift of energy – away from the serious, disciplined, depressive, authority-driven, hard time of Capricorn and into a lighter, more sociable, freedom-loving, experimental, progressive and inventive time of Aquarius. The areas of life associated with Aquarius – such as democracy, community, human rights, freedom of speech and intelligent debate, research and experimentation, the discovery of truths and universal laws leading to enlightenment, scientific and technological advances and innovations for the benefit of all – come more into the spotlight. There is a great movement towards a society where all have the freedom to do their own thing and are able to express their individuality, ideas and inventions both for themselves and for the good of the collective, for the benefit of society as a whole, and to build structures and systems to enable this. Those in authority (whether parents, bosses or governments) need to be more forward thinking and bring in rules and reforms for the good of everyone, to build community, to be more democratic and open to different opinions, to respect human rights and diversity, to use technology and science to better serve society and to embrace inventions and advancements that benefit the whole of humanity. At the same time the revolutionaries and rebels need to recognise the need for rules and governance, for structures and systems to organise life to ensure stability and protection, and to understand that freedom comes with responsibilities.
The conjunction of these two planets (which takes place every 20 years) augurs a new era, a new order, a new beginning that defines the next 20 years, and in Aquarius means a major shift of the times, especially as this is the start of a new 200 year cycle of the Saturn/Jupiter conjunctions taking place in air signs. During the last 200 years the conjunctions have mainly taken place in earth signs with the concomitant emphasis on money, goods, consumerism and profit-making, characteristics of capitalism. So this could well mean the end of capitalism and the start of a move towards more equal, diverse and democratic community-based systems, run by and for the people. It is definitely a case of out with the old and stale and in with new and fresh energies, the next generation taking over to become the elders in society.
